Judge in cop killing trial lifts gag order and unseals documents, but they stay hidden
Cook County judge poised to oversee the murder trial of a man accused of fatally shooting Chicago police Officer Michael Bailey in 2010 on Friday overturned an earlier decision to conceal court documents from the public and news outlets.
But in a twist, despite the ruling, the files Judge Stanley Sacks unsealed in the case against Antwon Carter, 31, weren’t released Friday because they weren’t sent to the court clerk’s office at the Leighton Criminal Court Building before Sacks’ staff left for the day.
Sacks unsealed the court documents and lifted the gag order on attorneys in the case against Carter, who prosecutors say shot Bailey during an attempted carjacking in the Park Manor neighborhood on the city’s South Side. Bailey, 62, was washing his new Buick, an early retirement gift to himself a few weeks ahead of leaving the department, after his shift as an overnight bodyguard for then-Mayor Richard M. Daley.
“I’ve been doing this a long time, but I never claimed infallibility,” Sacks said. “… I think the order by me was incorrect at the time. It was not an effort to protect the rights of Antwon Carter. And the public has the right to know what’s going on.”
Three jailhouse witnesses have said Carter told them he killed a cop, including Carter’s former cellmate who gave the most extensive details about the purported confession, but later recanted. Under a new state law intended to add more scrutiny to controversial use of jailhouse informants, who have been known to lie to get more leniency in their own cases, judges now assess the reliability of these informants ahead of trial.
Sacks had been set to determine the credulity of the jailhouse informants in Carter’s case, but because his rulings in the case have been under seal, it’s unclear how he has ruled — and won’t be known until the files in the case are made public.

In wide-ranging testimony before the U.S. Congress on Feb. 7, Adm. Craig Faller, the newly confirmed commander of U.S. Southern Command, warned lawmakers about China’s accelerated expansion into Latin America. Not only does China support the autocratic regimes in Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua and employ predatory lending practices across the region, but it is also investing in key infrastructure such as a deep-space tracking facility in Argentina, Faller told lawmakers.

Reddit Is Blocked in China, but May Land a Massive Investment From Tencent
Reddit is blocked in China, but that isn’t stopping one of the country’s largest technology firms, Tencent from making a massive investment to help keep the “Internet’s front page,” moving full speed ahead.
Reddit is said to be raising between $150 million and $300 million as part of a Series D fundraising round led by Tencent. The round is being raised at a pre-money valuation of $2.7 billion, and depending on how much Reddit raises, could push the company past a $3 billion valuation, according to TechCrunch, which first reported news of the fundraising round.
Reddit users were quick to point out the irony of Tencent and Reddit joining forces.

As people celebrated to welcome in the Year of the Pig Monday night, a man surnamed Lu set fire to the home of his brother in the northern province of Shaanxi, killing seven, according to police in the town of Baoji.

Beijing (CNN)For Qin Taixiao, old age is a time of loneliness and back-breaking labor.
Every day in winter, the ailing 68-year-old wakes early, collects 50 kilograms (110 pounds) of firewood from the nearby forest, and hauls it home on his back. He does it again in the afternoon.
Burning wood instead of coal is a cheaper way to stave off the freezing temperatures of the northern Chinese winter.
Qin and his wife, Sun Sherong, have spent the past year almost entirely alone. They live in an isolated and largely abandoned village about 240 kilometers (150 miles) from Beijing.
Between his trips to the forest, Qin manages his emphysema and colon cancer with the meager amounts of drugs he can afford.
"What can I say?" he says. "Life's all right. There is no other way."

Suspicion falls on China after cyber attack on Australian Parliament — and it's not surprising
It's not necessarily surprising — China has form at being blamed for cyber attacks against Australia and other nations.
But it's more than just form that sees China come under suspicion.
Beijing has an entire military unit tasked with carrying out these sorts of actions — the People's Liberation Army Unit 61398, a covert operation blamed in 2013 for stealing secrets from US companies.
So when Australia's Parliament is hacked — a pretty blatant act by any state or group — it's easy to point the finger at Beijing, even though Russia and North Korea are also "bad actors" known to have carried out cyber attacks throughout the world.
But analysts say it will take time to forensically identify exactly where the attack originated, even though it bears the hallmarks of a state-sponsored attack.

Ex-CIA and FBI director threatened by scammer, then helps put him in prison
Washington (CNN)A Jamaican man chose the wrong person to try to extort: the only one to lead both the FBI and CIA.
William Webster, who is now 94 years old, and his wife, Lynda, were targeted four years ago by a man who peddled a lottery scam over phone calls and emails. Over multiple phone calls, Keniel Aeon Thomas of Jamaica told the Websters he'd set their house ablaze or have a sniper shoot them in the back of the head if they didn't pay him thousands of dollars, according to prosecutors' filings.
The Websters say they used their knowledge of the FBI to help send him to prison, which a federal judge did on Friday after both spoke to the court.
"We are lucky that we have a few friends that could be helpful to us," Lynda Webster told the judge.
William Webster received the first call. The caller, Thomas, identified himself as "David Morgan," the head of "Mega Millions." Thomas told Webster he had won $15.5 million and a Mercedez-Benz and needed to wire $50,000 to cover taxes before collecting the award. That's when Webster first reached out to the FBI.
The caller tried again the next day, reaching William Webster once more, who told him he didn't have the money readily available.
