How to spot a clown
I recently met with Jacob Ostreicher, the Orthodox Jewish businessman who was falsely accused of drug trafficking and left for dead in a Bolivian hell-hole. He was saved by actor Sean Penn, who traveled to Bolivia, intervened with President Eva Morales and whisked Ostreicher out of prison in circumstances that remain mysterious.
In recognition of his heroism, our organization, This World: The Values Network, is honoring Sean, along with my former Oxford students Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey and Israeli Ambassador Ron Dermer, as well as anti-genocide campaigner John Prendergast, as this year’s Champions of Jewish Values at our annual gala dinner in New York City on May 18.
Some were curious. Sean Penn? Champion of Jewish values? But what did all these complainers do to save Ostreicher? Penn risked his own safety to save a complete stranger, and one of Judaism’s greatest mitzvot is releasing those held unjustly. And this is aside from the tens of thousands of lives that Sean has saved in Haiti.
The Jewish community is typically embarrassed by our prison population. We want Jewish names displayed on buildings at Harvard, not on wanted posters. Only a few humanitarian organizations, like Chabad’s Aleph Institute, give a damn about Jews who are incarcerated.

There's been no shortage of religious outcry over the Trump administration's policy of separating minor children from their parents after crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops called the policy "immoral," Cardinal Timothy Dolan said it was “unbiblical,” and members of Attorney General Jeff Sessions's denomination, the United Methodist Church, accused him of child abuse.
Yet the most religiously observant members of the first family have yet to weigh in. Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner have so far been publicly silent on the border separations.
Levi Shemtov, the couple’s Washington, D.C.–based rabbi, who is executive vice president of American Friends of Lubavitch (Chabad), told Newsweek that he views the situation as complicated.

Perhaps the Jewish Messiah is already here, though we are not aware of his coming? All Jewish dreams and desires were fulfilled this mid-May. Well, almost all. Two great world power leaders competed in their benevolence to Jews, while ordinary Israelis had fun and exhilarating soft target practice shooting unarmed Gazans or at least cheering the sharpshooters. Iranians gnashed their teeth but did nothing. The US Congress deemed that the Poles should pay the Jews $300 billion in tribute. And an exceedingly obnoxious Jewish wench got the crown of the European art scene, accidentally ensuring that the new capital of Israel, Jerusalem, will be the location of a prominent international gathering next year.
As for other Jews, they learned from the Matrix protagonist, Neo (Keanu Reeves), who had been taught to (dis)regard obvious dangers as maya, as a mirage created by the Matrix, and he jumped from skyscrapers and dodged bullets. Jews apparently have a similar attitude to reality. One day it won’t work, to their surprise, but this time it worked.
