Defiant: Dozens of New Mexico sheriffs take stance against state’s new gun control legislation

More than two dozen New Mexico sheriffs have stepped up to voice their opposition to new gun control legislation that is currently being considered by the state legislature.

“You’re just taking guns out of law-abiding citizen’s hands,” Lea County Sheriff Corey Helton told KOAT-TV. “This is not going to affect the criminals out there. They’re going to be able to get guns and they do not follow the law.”

Helton is one of 29 sheriffs who signed onto a statement issued by the New Mexico Sheriff’s Association opposing four related gun control bills they say will not at all be effective crime deterrents, but would instead criminalize lawful gun owners.

SpaceX seeks FCC approval for up to 1M Starlink satellite earth stations

SpaceX has opened a new window into its ambitious plans for a global satellite broadband data network, thanks to an earth-station license application filed with the Federal Communications Commission.

The application, filed on behalf of a sister company called SpaceX Services, seeks blanket approval for up to a million earth stations that would be used by customers of the Starlink satellite internet service. The stations would rely on a flat-panel, phased-array system to transmit and receive signals in the Ku-band to and from the Starlink constellation.

Those satellites have already received clearance from the FCC, and SpaceX plans to launch the first elements of the initial 4,425-satellite constellation this year, using Falcon 9 rockets. The company sent up its first two experimental broadband satellites last year and has been tweaking its plans for Starlink as a result of those space-to-ground tests. Eventually, SpaceX wants to build up the network to take in as many as 12,000 satellites in low Earth orbit.

SpaceX’s facility in Redmond, Wash., is playing the lead role in developing the satellite system. Last year, the Redmond office went through a management shakeup aimed at accelerating progress on Starlink.

Hack of billion-dollar Norwegian firm is tied to Chinese espionage group APT10

Weeks after the Department of Justice announced the indictment of two men linked with a Chinese state-sponsored hacking group, security researchers say they have uncovered a cyber-espionage campaign by the same entity against a European software company, a U.S. law firm, and a global apparel company.

Analysts at Recorded Future and Rapid7 tracked the hacking operation between November 2017 and September 2018, and publicly revealed the breaches Wednesday.

The researchers assessed with “high confidence” that APT10, a group tied to China’s civilian intelligence agency, was responsible for the hacking, calling the group “the most significant Chinese state-sponsored cyber threat to global corporations known to date.”

UK: Mother Arrested in Front of Children for Calling Trans Activist a Man on Twitter

British police arrested a mother in front of her children for calling a trans activist a man in a Twitter argument, with a judge subsequently issuing an injunction banning her from referring to the person’s “former male identity”.

38-year-old Kate Scottow, of Hitchin, Hertfordshire, said she was “arrested in my home by three officers, with my autistic ten-year-old daughter and breastfed 20-month-old son present” in comments posted to the Mumsnet online forum, according to the Mail on Sunday.

“I was then detained for seven hours in a cell with no sanitary products (which I said I needed) before being interviewed then later released under investigation… I was arrested for harassment and malicious communications because I called someone out and misgendered them on Twitter.”

Payback time for Australia’s corrupt banks

A year-long Royal Commission’s findings into widespread bank misconduct promises a huge shakeup of the sector

Australia’s tainted financial sector faces its biggest shakeup in a decade after damning findings of a year-long Royal Commission inquiry were handed down on Monday. To what extent the commission’s wide-ranging proposals are to be implemented will likely be a key campaign issue as the country gears up for elections later this year.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said the government will take action on all 76 recommendations of the commission into misconduct in the industry, which heard that banks levied fees on dead customers, sold packages they knew were worthless and charged clients for services that were not rendered.

North Carolina Sheriffs Clash With ICE Officials After Series of Unwanted Immigration Raids

Over the past week, nearly 230 people in North Carolina have been rounded up by black-jacketed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. And local sheriffs are not at all happy about the wide-ranging immigration raids.

“The recent actions of ICE agents are making persons in our community afraid of law enforcement,” Durham County Sheriff Clarence Birkhead said in a statement. “The decision I made to not honor ICE detainers was in part to help all of Durham’s people feel safe and encourage our residents to feel like they can trust my deputies – and law enforcement in general.”

As Law&Crime previously reported, ICE officials threatened North Carolina with “increased enforcement activity”–deportation raids–last December after several sheriffs announced they would no longer collaborate with the agency by holding undocumented immigrants in custody after they had already posted bail under the auspices of the 287(g) program

Houston Detective Relieved of Duty After No-Knock Raid Leads to Two People Being Killed

A Houston police narcotics detective involved in executing a no-knock search warrant last week has been relieved of his duty amid fallout from the incident, according three law enforcement sources cited by KHOU. The 22-year veteran had to hand over his badge pending an internal affairs investigation, but the outlet said it was unclear why he’s temporarily off the job.

Two drug suspects–Dennis Tuttle, 59, and Rhogena Nicholas, 58–were killed, four officers were shot, and a fifth was injured as a result of the no-knock warrant issued on Jan. 28 in Houston, Texas. Scrutiny, however, reportedly rests on the credibility of details in the affidavit. Cops said they received information about suspected drug dealing at a residence.

Geneva Politicians Vote to Propose Julian Assange Asylum

The Geneva city parliament has adopted a motion demanding that the Swiss government offer asylum to controversial WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

The somewhat surprising resolution was the result of an hour-long debate on Wednesday evening, framed in the context of providing better protection for whistleblowers.

The text was proposed by Eric Bertinat of the conservative right People’s Party – a party not usually known for backing acts of “civil disobedience”, in the words of Social Democratic politician Albane Schlechten.

Nevertheless, the proposition picked up enough support from left-wing politicians to withstand opposition from the centre-right Radical Liberals.

The People’s Party have also tried to push through legislation on the Geneva cantonal level to better protect whistleblowers, while at the federal level in Bern, one of its parliamentarians has raised Assange’s case before the Federal Council (government).

Pay attention Freddy you FKwit with the muh arrests bullshit all day long.,, this is why their all corrupt .

Why didn't DoJ prosecute FL election official for destroying ballots in 2016?

Broward County, FL election head Brenda Snipes is back in the news, as a former candidate who ran against Debbie Wasserman Schultz in the 2016 Democratic primary wondered aloud in a tweet why the Department of Justice never prosecuted her for illegally destroying paper ballots from the race.

Tim Canova got only 43% of the vote in that primary, but he challenged the results in court. While the case was being decided, Canova requested that Broward County hand over the thousands of paper ballots that had been cast. When Brenda Snipes' office refused, he sued - only to find out later that Snipes had destroyed the ballots in direct violation of federal law and Florida state law.

Big League Politics reported, "On May 11, 2018, the Florida Circuit Court granted Plaintiff Canova summary judgment, and found that Snipes had violated numerous state and federal statutes, including laws punishable as felonies with up to five years in prison. The Court’s ruling made clear that Snipes’ destruction of ballots was illegal on several separate counts.”

It doesn't matter if the destruction of the ballots were intentional or not. But both the county and the feds refused to prosecute. Why?

Assistant United States Attorney for the US Attorney's Office is none other than Debbie Wasserman-Schultz's brother, Steven. And Canova found out from the local district attorney, who was considering prosecuting Snipes, who was involved in the decision not to prosecute Snipes:

I’ve been told it was Rod Rosenstein, the Deputy AG, along with his assistant Steven Wasserman no doubt, who stopped a Federal investigation into Broward’s illegal destruction of all ballots cast in our 2016 primary against Debbie What’sHerRig Schultz.

Exclusive: Venezuela shifts oil ventures’ accounts to Russian bank – document, sources

CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela's state-run oil company PDVSA is telling customers of its joint ventures to deposit oil sales proceeds in an account recently opened at Russia's Gazprombank AO, according to sources and an internal document seen by Reuters on Saturday.

PDVSA's move comes after the United States imposed tough, new financial sanctions on Jan. 28 aimed at blocking Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro's access to the country's oil revenue.

Supporters of Venezuelan opposition leader and self-proclaimed interim president Juan Guaido said recently that a fund would be established to accept proceeds from sales of Venezuelan oil.

The United States and dozens of other countries have recognized Guaido as the nation's legitimate head of state. Maduro has denounced Guaido as a U.S. puppet seeking to foment a coup.

PDVSA also has begun pressing its foreign partners holding stakes in joint ventures in its key Orinoco Belt producing area to formally decide whether they will continue with the projects, according to two sources with knowledge of the talks.

The joint venture partners include Norway's Equinor ASA, U.S.-based Chevron Corp and France's Total SA.

On May 18, 1980, a major volcanic eruption occurred at Mount St. Helens, a volcano located in Skamania County, in the U.S. state of Washington. The eruption (a VEI 5 event) was the most significant volcanic eruption to occur in the contiguous 48 U.S. states since the much smaller 1915 eruption of Lassen Peak in California.[1] It has often been declared as the most disastrous volcanic eruption in U.S. history. The eruption was preceded by a two-month series of earthquakes and steam-venting episodes, caused by an injection of magma at shallow depth below the volcano that created a large bulge and a fracture system on the mountain's north slope.

An earthquake at 8:32:17 a.m. PDT (UTC−7) on Sunday, May 18, 1980, caused the entire weakened north face to slide away, creating the largest landslide ever recorded. This allowed the partly molten, high-pressure gas- and steam-rich rock in the volcano to suddenly explode northwards toward Spirit Lake in a hot mix of lava and pulverized older rock, overtaking the avalanching face.

An eruption column rose 80,000 feet (24 km; 15 mi) into the atmosphere and deposited ash in 11 U.S. states.[2] At the same time, snow, ice and several entire glaciers on the volcano melted, forming a series of large lahars (volcanic mudslides) that reached as far as the Columbia River, nearly 50 miles (80 km) to the southwest. Less severe outbursts continued into the next day, only to be followed by other large, but not as destructive, eruptions later that year. Thermal energy released during the eruption was equal to 26 megatons.[3]
