Newspapers started out as gossip publications with small bits of anecdotal truth sprinkled in. There was a time before the DS got complete control of the press that articles, especially articles against the President of the USA, had to be sourced and provable before being published. The stories about prostitutes in the WH were backed up by actually WH logs showing the people involved, the days they came,when they came and when they left. This was a credible article when published.
