Has anyone ever heard of this? You can clearly see the outline of a long lost, complicated city in google earth.

Yeah sure, except this area span is much larger than the entire neighbouring "California City" right next to it.
See this comparison in size, a DEVELOPER developed an area THIS LARGE and then just doesn't do anything with it?
