then: Open as Layers: Photo

Always open as layers new items, easier to manipulate.

Scale image if need be.

Once you like the layout,

select the first layer, background

click 'Rectangle SELECT',

stretch to just beyond pics borders,

then: Image: Crop to selection.

Will cut off your extra white space.

GIMP does not draw lines, arrows, boxes, and circles very well without plugins and knowledge.

For that Greenshot or PickPick fills this role well.
