Nearly 100 Children DEAD In Latest Disease Outbreak

Nearly 100 children have died in during the most recent Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Health officials are warning that it isn’t over yet as the disease continues to infect more people and spread further.

“We are at a crossroads,” Heather Kerr, Save the Children’s Country Director in DRC, said in a press release. “If we don’t take urgent steps to contain this, the outbreak might last another six months, if not the whole year.” According to the press release from Save the Children, 65 of the 97 children who have died since August were under the age of 5 years old. More than 180 other children have been orphaned by the disease’s most recent outbreak.

This outbreak is the second-largest in recorded history, with the charity reporting at least 731 confirmed cases of Ebola within the last six months, and 484 deaths. The country suffered its worst outbreak between 2014 and 2016, which claimed over 11,000 lives and prompted calls for more preventative efforts and the development of an experimental vaccine. However, the lack of Ebola knowledge continues to plague relief efforts. –Fox News

New Yorkers cautioned against purchasing black market prescription pills

NEW YORK – DEA New York Division Special Agent in Charge Ray Donovan, New York City Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget G. Brennan, New York City Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill and New York State Police Superintendent Keith M. Corlett announced the seizure of 20,000 pills of counterfeit oxycodone suspected to contain fentanyl and two kilograms of heroin (more than 4.5 pounds) over the past week as a result of two investigations. The pills carry a street value of up to $600,000.

Counterfeit oxycodone pills containing fentanyl, a potentially lethal synthetic opioid, are increasingly appearing on the black market in New York City.

Four defendants are charged in criminal complaints filed by the Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor. The arrests are a result of two investigations by the New York Drug Enforcement Task Force Group T-12, which is comprised of agents and officers from the DEA New York Division, the New York City Police Department and the New York State Police. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department assisted in the investigation.

Captain Zoe ‘Sis’ Kotnik had been appointed as commander of the ACC F-16 Viper demo team just two weeks prior. The demonstration team performs at air shows and events across the country, showcasing the F-16’s capabilities.

Col. Derek O’Malley, commander of the 20th Fighter Wing, said in a Facebook post that he was dismissing Kotnik because he had “lost confidence in her ability to lead the team.”

Some western states want to preserve terrorist enclave in Idlib: Russia

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said that some Western countries wish to preserve an enclave that is a terrorist hotbed in Syria’s Idlib province.

“There’s been news that some Western countries wish to do precisely that. They want this enclave where Jabhat al-Nusra (terrorist group outlawed in Russia) controls more than 90% of the territory to become a participant in the future political process,” Lavrov stated at a news conference on Wednesday.

“It is clear that there can be no talks with terrorists. Our Western counterparts have repeatedly demonstrated double standards, so I cannot rule out that the information I’ve mentioned is well-founded.”

The top Russian diplomat recalled the gist of the agreements between the Russian and Turkish presidents on the de-escalation zone in Idlib.

Afghanistan sacks 12 election officials amid fraud investigation

Afghanistan has dismissed 12 election officials amid an investigation into corruption following problems with the organisation of a general election last year, with fears growing that the purge could delay a July presidential election.

President Ashraf Ghani’s government agreed to an amendment of the election law to improve transparency following meetings with political, civil society groups and opposition parties, and his spokesman said the removal of the 12 was a consequence.
