More Than 1,000 Scientists Dissent From Darwinism

The list of scientists who publicly doubt the Darwinian theory of evolution grew to more than 1,000 members in February, according to the Discovery Institute, the Seattle-based nonprofit that has maintained the list for over a decade. The scientists who have signed the two-sentence dissent statement come from all over the world with degrees from prestigious universities including Yale, Princeton, and Stanford. Signatories must hold a doctorate in a scientific field or hold a doctor of medicine degree and serve as a professor of medicine. “Careful examination of the evidence for Darwinian theory should be encouraged,” says the statement.

The landmark number of signatures is significant since the scientific field in the United States is dominated by Darwinian orthodoxy and dissenters are swiftly ostracized. While many scientists doubt the science that props up Darwin’s theory, few do so openly fearing for their careers. The list grew past the 1,000-signature mark at some point in 2018 but was officially updated in February this year. The delay is due to the process involved in verifying the scientific credentials warning scientists about the dangers associated with signing the statement.

“On the one hand, even more scientists are raising questions about the sufficiency of random mutations and natural selection to explain the complexity of life. On the other hand, those defending modern Darwinian theory have become even more intolerant toward anyone who questions the theory,” Dr. John West, vice president at Discovery Institute, told The Epoch Times in an email. “For myself, I think that’s likely because they are insecure and know that the scientific problems with Darwinian theory are reaching a tipping point. When the evidence is against you, you try to suppress it by punishing dissenters,” he said. The list, titled The Scientific Dissent From Darwinism, was conceived in 2001 as a response to incessant claims in the media that there are no scientists who are skeptical about Darwinism. The idea was to show that there are prominent scientists “who have scientific objections” to Darwin’s theory.

While your statement is partially correct, not all believe that either. If you read the article you come to understand why many stayed so silent. Remember the "Silent Majority" it is real and it isn't fair to globally put all of them in to your carefully crafted box.

More Than 180 New Jersey Clerics Named as Accused Abusers

NEWARK, N.J.—New Jersey’s five Roman Catholic dioceses listed more than 180 priests on Feb. 13, who have been credibly accused of sexually abusing minors over a span of several decades, joining more than two dozen other states that have named suspected abusers in the wake of a landmark grand jury report in Pennsylvania last year.

The lists released Wednesday identified priests and deacons who served in the dioceses of Camden, Trenton, Metuchen, and Paterson and the Archdiocese of Newark. Many priests on the lists are deceased, and others have been removed from ministry. Cardinal Joseph Tobin, the archbishop of Newark, which listed 63 former priests, said in a statement that he hoped the disclosure “will help bring healing to those whose lives have been so deeply violated.” Camden’s diocese listed 56 priests and one deacon; Trenton’s diocese named 30 priests; the Paterson diocese listed 28; and Metuchen’s diocese named nine plus two others who are currently the subject of civil investigations.

State Attorney General Gurbir Grewal formed a task force in the fall to conduct a criminal investigation into sexual abuse by clergy in the state, shortly after a Pennsylvania grand jury report identified over 300 predator priests and more than 1,000 victims in that state. “While this is a positive first step towards transparency and accountability, I hope this spirit of openness continues during the course of our ongoing investigation and in response to our requests for records and information,” Grewal said in a statement Wednesday. Newark’s list includes Theodore McCarrick, a former Newark archbishop who served as archbishop from 2000 to 2006 in Washington. McCarrick was removed from public ministry in June.

The lists released by the diocese don’t include details about specific allegations or when they are alleged to have happened; rather, any details about the named priests and the crimes of which they are accused come from court records or previously published reports. Several priests who served in the Newark archdiocese have been accused of molesting boys as part of their volunteer work with Boy Scout troops, according to published reports. Others named in the release were arrested, convicted or pleaded guilty and were returned to service after probation or treatment, according to court records and published reports.

Senate Democrats Press Trump for China IP, Tech Transfer Commitments

WASHINGTON—Seven U.S. Democratic senators urged President Donald Trump on Feb. 13 to press China for a trade deal that fully addresses the technology transfer and intellectual property concerns outlined by U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer.

Led by Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey, the senators said in a letter to Trump that any deal with Beijing must at a minimum commit China to “cease the predatory practices” identified in USTR’s Section 301 investigation, which formed the basis for U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods. “As you approach the final weeks of negotiations with China, we urge you to insist that the deal make substantial, verifiable, and enforceable progress to address the myriad threats identified in USTR’s investigation,” the senators wrote. Several U.S. lawmakers and business groups have urged Trump in recent weeks not to settle for an agreement based largely on increased Chinese purchases of farm and energy commodities, amid signals that Trump is eager for a deal with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

On Wednesday, Trump said trade talks in Beijing are “going along very well.” Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin are due to meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s top economic adviser, Vice Premier Liu He, on Thursday and Friday.

The letter from the Democratic senators reminded Trump of the main Chinese violations identified by Lighthizer’s investigation last year, including unfair investment restrictions and licensing practices that pressure U.S. companies into turning over technology to Chinese firms, state driven acquisitions of U.S. technology firms and state-sponsored cyber theft of American trade secrets. “Your negotiations should seek to extract meaningful commitments from China on each of these elements and end the threats that these policies pose to the U.S. economy and national security,” they wrote. In addition to Menendez, the letter was signed by Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, Mark Warner of Virginia, Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, Ben Cardin of Maryland, Michael Bennet of Colorado and Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada.
