Philanthropists hope to transform uninspiring synagogues
JANUARY 7, 2000
NEW YORK — Will "synagogue transformation" replace "continuity" as the communal buzzword of the next century?
The powerhouse philanthropy triumvirate of Edgar Bronfman, Charles Schusterman and Michael Steinhardt intends to make it so with a new endeavor they have named STAR: Synagogue Transformation and Renewal.
The threesome is planning to ante up several million dollars — and attract other megadonors — for the project, as they have for previous projects.
The three already have bolstered day-school education through the Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education, which provides substantial funding to new Jewish elementary and middle schools. In addition, Steinhardt helped launch Birthright Israel, which provides free trips to Israel for young adults.

Born to a Jewish family,[7] the son of Sol Frank Steinhardt, a compulsive high-stakes gambler, New York's leading jewel fence (according to then-DA Frank Hogan), and convicted felon. His father was close friends with underworld crime bosses Meyer Lansky, Vincent Alo (aka "Jimmy Blue Eyes" Alo), and Albert Anastasia (he was out gambling with Anastasia the night before he was killed). Sol, aka "Red McGee," was later convicted on charges of buying and selling stolen jewelry and sentenced to five to ten years in prison.[8]

During Prohibition, Sam Bronfman shipped liquor to pickup points along the Canadian-American border, where it was bought by American bootleggers. One of Bronfman's closest business associates was the American gangster Meyer Lansky. Because others brought his liquor across the border, Bronfman always insisted he was not a bootlegger. Lansky's associate, Lucky Luciano, however, said Bronfman "was bootleggin' enough whiskey across the Canadian border to double the size of Lake Erie."
