JP Morgan Chase mpany : J.P. Morgan cuts U.S. fourth-quarter 2018 GDP view after dismal retail sales

EW YORK (Reuters) - J.P. Morgan on Thursday reduced its tracking estimate on U.S. economic growth in the fourth quarter of 2018 following data that showed domestic retail sales took a 1.2 percent "nosedive" in December, which was its steepest monthly drop in nine years.

U.S. gross domestic product likely grew at a 2.0 percent annualized pace in the final three months of last year based on the latest retail sales figures, slower than an earlier calculated rate of 2.6 percent, J.P. Morgan economist Michael Feroli wrote in a research note.

FED'S BRAINARD SAYS BALANCE-SHEET RUNOFF SHOULD PROBABLY END THIS YEAR

Federal Reserve governor Lael Brainard said she expected the central bank could end the runoff of its asset portfolio later this year.

"Balance-sheet normalization probably should come to an end later this year," she said in a CNBC interview on Thursday. The process of passively shrinking the Fed's $4 trillion holdings of bonds and other assets "has really done the work that it was supposed to do," she said.

Fed officials agreed at their meeting last month to formalize important operational changes that will allow them to manage monetary policy with a much larger balance sheet than they had before the 2008 financial crisis, but Fed Chairman Jerome Powell didn't say how much longer the central bank would shrink its asset portfolio.

The Fed began to reduce the portfolio in 2017 by allowing limited amounts of Treasury and mortgage securities to mature without replacing them. The portfolio has fallen to $4 trillion now from around $4.5 trillion at its peak.

While the Fed expanded its holdings from 2008 to 2014 to provide more stimulus to the economy, officials in recent months have said they plan to end the runoff for reasons unrelated to providing more or less stimulus to the economy. Instead, the decision is being driven by a technical debate about the demand for reserves, or deposits held at the Fed, in the banking system.

Biotech Hedge Fund Bailed on Drugmaker Before Its Depression Treatment Scored

Baker Bros. Advisors LP, a hedge fund known for making big biotechnology bets, looks to have relinquished its stake in Sage Therapeutics Inc. leading up the drugmakerโ€™s slam-dunk depression study.

Baker Bros., which was among the top 20 holders of the biotech stock at the end of September, sold its final 567,497 shares by the end of 2018, according to a regulatory filing this week. Though itโ€™s possible the fund bought back in during a narrow window in early January, the end of the most recent filing period came a week before Sageโ€™s next-generation antidepressant succeeded in reducing womenโ€™s postpartum depression symptoms in a pivotal study, triggering a rally of more than 40 percent.
