FWIW, it is not disinformation that the outer support charges on a crest/coat of arms would have different symbols. Most of that was added in the Victorian era when symbology/esoterics were beloved. There are many versions of the Flynn/Flinn (many spellings) crest/coat of arms.

That said, I think this is clearly a wolf in both images. And that is substantially enough to say that the image on @GenFlynn's header bears strong resemblance to the Flynn Family Crest as posted by his brother @JosephJFlynn1

Many versions of wolf/dogs exist in heraldry.

Mullets/stars can have any number of points and could be related to the 'knighthood' or knight charge seen.
