OIG finds database with missing FBI texts

OIG finds database with missing FBI texts!

Still trying to make some sense of this…

Feel free to dig!

Snip…

The OIG requested from the FBI text messages of, among others, two employees in connection with the Pre-election Review. When the OIG received the text message production from FBI, there was a time period of several months for which FBI did not produce text messages for mobile devices used by the two FBI employees. The FBI informed the OIG that it was aware that there were deficiencies in its collection application and that it was changing the model of the mobile device issued to FBI employees as part of a regular technical refresh and to mitigate the problem. However, the OIG later learned that, even after upgrading to new devices, the data collection tool utilized by the FBI was still not reliably collecting text messages from approximately 10 percent of more than 31,000 FBI-issued mobile devices.

In addition, during the OIG’s forensic examination of FBI mobile devices that were used by the two employees, the OIG discovered a database on the mobile devices containing a plain text repository of a substantial number of text messages sent and received by those devices.

Neither ESOC nor the vendor of the application was aware of the existence, origin, or purpose of this database. OIG analysis of the text messages in the database compared to ESOC productions of text messages during the same time periods when the collection tool was functional identified a significant number of text messages found in the database that were missing from the ESOC production. Furthermore, the Subject Matter Expert with whom the OIG consulted in connection with its forensic analysis of the devices identified additional potential security vulnerabilities regarding the collection application. The OIG has provided these findings to the FBI.

Hacker dumps 620 MILLION private records from 16 websites on the dark web - including data from popular apps like MyFitnessPal, Dubsmash and Whitepages

Cybercriminals recently dumped data from 617 million accounts on the dark web

Account data was taken from breached sites including Dubsmash and 500px

Experts recommend users change their password frequently to avoid hackers

Data from some 617 million accounts has been dumped and put up for sale on the dark web.

For just $20,000 in Bitcoin, cybercriminals can purchase the records, which were stolen from 16 hacked websites, many of which are popular sites like MyFitnessPal, Dubsmash, CoffeeMeetsBagel and Whitepages, among others.

In some cases, the stolen data included email addresses, passwords and location information.

The listings are currently hosted on Dream Market, the largest market on the dark web, according to the Register, which first spotted the stolen data.

In order to access the dark web, users have to download a Tor client, which is a network that hides the IP address and the activity of the user.

This enables them to visit sites 'hidden' in the dark web.

A review of the data listed on Dream Market by the Register showed it primarily consists of account holder names, email addresses and passwords.

While no bank or credit card information appears to be listed, there is other personal data like location info and social media authentication tokens.

These tokens work as digital keys, allowing anyone who obtains them to log into related social media accounts without the need for a password.

Passwords listed on Dream Market are one-way encrypted, meaning the buyer has to crack the 'hash,' or a random jumble of letters and numbers in order to gain entry.

Former teacher indicted in Missouri for allegedly producing child pornography with 3 minor victims

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A former northwestern Missouri teacher was indicted by a federal grand jury Tuesday for allegedly producing child pornography with three minor victims.

This indictment resulted from an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and the Clinton County (Missouri) Sheriff’s Department.

William Derek Williams, 39, of Cameron, Missouri, was charged with three counts of producing child pornography, involving three different minor victims, from Jan. 1, 2013, to Sept. 6, 2018. Williams is also charged with one count of possessing child pornography. He formerly worked a high school language arts teacher, and more recently as a part-time high school multimedia teacher at the time of the alleged offense.

The charges contained in this indictment are simply accusations, and not evidence of guilt. Evidence supporting the charges must be presented to a federal trial jury, whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney David Luna, Western District of Missouri.

This investigation was conducted under HSI’s Operation Predator, an international initiative to protect children from sexual predators. Since the launch of Operation Predator in 2003, HSI has arrested more than 19,000 individuals for crimes against children, including the production and distribution of online child exploitation material, traveling overseas for sex with minors, and sex trafficking of children. In fiscal year 2018, more than 3,000 (3191) child predators were arrested by HSI special agents under this initiative and more than 850 (859) victims identified or rescued.
