Its way more than that. Some of these people are so arrogant and self important that there is no way they're going to let themselves be arrested and go to prison. The humiliation would be too much. They cannot take it.
Suicide is quick and easy, and it can be painless so it is a choice that some will make. Just take a pill and go to sleep, and never wake up again to face one's ugly reality.
There's nowhere for them to go. When you're that high profile there's nowhere to hide. They become less than nothing when all their cash and assets are seized. Some will try to hold out until the very end because they STILL don't believe that what once seemed so certain to go on indefinitely is suddenly coming to an end.
