Peace and Security

This is some biblical shit Anon's.

Will grandstanding in Warsaw help or hinder Netanyahu?

Opinion: The 1996 Sharm El Sheikh conference was meant to help Shimon Peres keep his PM's chair and save the peace process. The 2019 conference on 'peace and security in the Middle East' has similar objectives, but unlike the Sharm summit, there are no world leaders coming to Netanyahu's aid in the Polish capital.

n March 1996, the chances of then-prime minister Shimon Peres of winning reelection later that year dropped significantly. The White House was terrified: Peres losing the elections, President Bill Clinton's advisors feared, could be the downfall of the entire Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

Spanish Prime Minister Calls General Elections For 28 April

The call for elections comes just two days after the Spanish parliament rejected a draft 2019 budget proposed by the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

"Between doing nothing and continuing without the budget and calling on Spaniards to have their say, I choose the second. Spain needs to keep advancing, progressing with tolerance, respect, moderation and common sense", Sanchez stated in an address to the nation. "I have proposed to dissolve parliament and call elections for April 28th".

At the moment the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) that formed the government, controls only 62 of the 266 seats in the upper house and 84 of 350 in the lower house of the Spanish Parliament (the Cortes Generales).

The general elections called by Sanchez would be the third in less than 4 years.

House Freedom Caucus Creates New Leadership Positions To Help Fight Dems In Congress

The House Freedom Caucus created three new leadership positions in 2019 which were filled Friday in order to help combat the Democratic majority in the House, The Daily Caller has learned.

The caucus, whose mission statement is to “give a voice to countless Americans who feel that Washington does not represent them,” elected three members in 2019 to fill new positions created by the caucus in 2019. Ohio Republican Rep. Warren Davidson will serve as policy chair for the Caucus. Georgia Republican Rep. Jody Hice will serve as communications chair and Pennsylvania Republican Rep. Scott Perry will serve as Caucus whip.

“I am deeply honored that my friends and colleagues have selected me to serve as the first Communications Chair of the House Freedom Caucus. As a former radio host, I am looking forward to lifting the forgotten voices of the American people and driving a conservative narrative in support of fiscal discipline, limited government, and traditional values, all with the ultimate goal of Republicans retaking the House majority,” Hice told TheDCNF Friday.

“This is especially important given the efforts of the radical left to make us a socialist country. I look forward to contrasting our message to theirs, and I am humbled by the opportunity to move our cause and our Caucus forward into the 116th Congress,” Hice continued.

House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows praised the three congressman on being elected to their new positions on the caucus, saying he believes they will help with upcoming debates, as the House lost control to Democrats after the 2018 midterm elections.

“Warren, Jody and Scott have distinguished themselves as compelling voices within the Caucus and effective representatives of their constituents. These new positions will help the Caucus better navigate upcoming legislative debates, and I can’t think of anyone more deserving and capable of filling them than these three,” Meadows told TheDCNF Friday morning.

Proposed ‘sanctions from hell’ against Russia may curb Trump, but won’t help US rule the world

Even as the ‘Russiagate’ probe crumbled in the US Senate, five senators resurrected a ‘sanctions bill from hell’ against Russia. What are the prospects of it passing, and does it even need to in order to achieve its objective?

The “Defending American Security from Kremlin Aggression (DASKA)” Act, also known as Senate Resolution 482, was announced on Wednesday by the leading Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations committee, Bob Menendez (D-New Jersey). It is a rehash of the August 2018 bill (S. 3336) proposed by Menendez and Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina), called the “sanctions bill from hell” at the time.

What’s in it?

Because DASKA has not been properly filed with the Library of Congress, the full text of the bill is not available just yet. Based on the announcement put out by Menendez, it goes beyond the previous proposal to sanction Russian sovereign debt and banks that “support Russian efforts to undermine democratic institutions in other countries,” investments in natural gas projects outside of Russia, as well as “political figures, oligarchs, and family members and other persons that facilitate illicit and corrupt activities, directly or indirectly, on behalf of Vladimir Putin.”

Even the most cursory observer will notice the bill treats alleged Russian meddling abroad and “illicit and corrupt activities” of the Russian president as established, proven facts (they are not). This is the same line of thinking used in the bill’s proposed sanctions against Russian security agents “deemed complicit in the Kerch Strait attack” – the November 2018 incident in which Russian coast guard stopped several Ukrainian vessels attempting to force passage from the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov.

Jared Kushner says Trump peace plan won’t include Saudi initiative

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence thanked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his commitment to the historic alliance between their two countries, adding: “Israel is our cherished ally."

WARSAW – US special envoy Jared Kushner confirmed Thursday that US President Donald Trump’s peace plan won’t be based on past international understanding such as the 2002 Saudi initiative, which the international community and the Palestinians have long touted as the basis of a two-state solution.

“I think it was a great initiative, in 2002 when it was done, but it hasn’t produced peace, so if that was the framework under which something would be accomplished then I think that would have been accomplished a long time ago, and then I wouldn’t be doing the duty I’m doing right now to try to bring the people together,” Kushner reportedly said behind closed doors at the Warsaw summit. His words were leaked to the Israeli media.

He also confirmed that the Trump peace plan would not be published until after the April 9 election.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that Kushner had dismissed the Saudi peace plan and spoken of a rollout date after the elections, when he gave a private briefing to Israeli reporters on the sidelines of the Warsaw summit.

He said Kushner had not provided any specific details about the plan and Netanyahu ducked a question about territorial concessions.

At a meeting with US Vice President Mike Pence, Netanyahu said he looked forward to receiving Trump’s peace plan. The Palestinians boycotted the meeting in Warsaw.

U.S. Forces Withdrew From Key Base In Northeastern Syria: Local Sources

U.S. forces withdrew from a key base located west of the city of Qamishli in northeastern Syria over the last few days, the Lebanese al-Manar TV reported on February 15 citing local sources.

The US-led coalition and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which control northeastern Syria, have not commented on these claims so far.

In December 2018, President Donald Trump announced that all U.S. troops will be withdrawn from Syria. The surprise decision led to a backlash from the mainstream media, prominent politicians and even senior officials in Trumps’ own administration.

Few days before Trump’s announcement, Syrian activists reported that the US-led coalition was expanding its base west of Qamishli, which is known as Heemo base. The activists claimed that the coalition installed a radar station and other heavy military equipment in the base.

The expansion of the base is an example of how the U.S. military command was working to strengthen U.S. presence in Syria without consent from the White House. This contradiction in strategies was likely among the resonse behind the resignation of Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis.

Kremlin: Russia’s stance on Skripal saga unchanged after ‘revelation’ of ‘third suspect’

According to Sky News, the suspect "is thought to be a senior member of Russia’s GRU agency" who uses the alias Sergei Fedotov

SOCHI, February 15. /TASS/. The Kremlin has not changed its stance on reports about the Salisbury poisoning suspects after some media outlets divulged the name of another individual allegedly linked to that incident, Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Friday.

"[The Kremlin comments on these reports] the way it commented on the reports about the first and second suspects. Nothing has changed here, our approach has remained the same," he stressed.

On Thursday, Britain’s Sky News network reported citing the Belligcat website that a ‘third man’ who was allegedly involved in poisoning retired Russian intelligence officer Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury last March was known as Denis Sergeev. According to Sky News, he "is thought to be a senior member of Russia’s GRU agency" who uses the alias Sergei Fedotov.

The TV channel asserted that on March 4, the day when Skripal and his daughter were poisoned, the 'third suspect' left Britain travelling to Moscow through Rome.

However, the Daily Telegraph earlier reported citing its own sources that he could still be in the UK.

Salisbury poisoning saga

On March 4, 2018, former Russian military intelligence Colonel Sergei Skripal, who had been convicted in Russia of spying for Great Britain and was later swapped for Russian intelligence officers, and his daughter Yulia, were found unconscious on a bench near the Maltings shopping center in Salisbury, the UK. Police said they had allegedly been exposed to a nerve agent.

London immediately accused Russia of being involved, but failed to furnish any evidence. British Prime Minister Theresa May rushed to blame Russia for "unlawful use of force" against her country. She identified the alleged substance used in the attack as the so-called Novichok nerve agent, allegedly developed in the former Soviet Union. Russia has flatly rejected these allegations pointing out that neither the Soviet Union nor Russia had any programs to develop that substance

Russia Urges US, Militant Leaders to Stop Holding Refugees in Rukban Camp - MoD

According to the Russian military, various militants are keeping people in the camp by force, while the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has previously noted that terrorists and smugglers in the area are using innocent people as human shields.

"We call on the American command and leaders of illegal militant groups in the al-Tanf zone to at least stop forcibly keeping women and children most affected by cold, illness and malnutrition in the camp. All of them will be given necessary assistance", Russian Defence Ministry spokesman, Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov, said Friday.

According to him, Russia and Syria will establish a temporary housing area for refugees from the camp.

"To save the refugees of the Rukban camp, the Russian centre for Syrian reconciliation, jointly with Syria's government, from February 19, 2019… will deploy temporary accommodation centres equipped with warm housing and provided with hot meals, other essentials and medical personnel… All refugees will be provided with motor transport for unimpeded and safe travel to their places of residence in the territory controlled by the Syrian government", he said.

The Rukban refugee camp is located near the Syrian-Jordan border in the zone of responsibility of the US al-Tanf base. Russia has accused the US base of providing a safe haven for terrorists, who have later launched attacks on the positions of the Syrian army. According to various estimates, there are at least 50,000 people inside the 55-kilometre security zone occupied by the United States.

BBC Distances Itself From Claims Of Its Own Producer That Douma Chemical Attack Scene Was Fake

The scandal with the fake White Helmets video from the Syrian city of Douma is developing.

On February 13th, BBC Syria’s producer Riam Dalati claimed that he could “without a doubt” prove that the Douma hospital scene following the alleged chemical attack in April 2018 was staged.

“After almost 6 months of investigations, i can prove without a doubt that the #Douma Hospital scene was staged. No fatalities occurred in the hospital.

All the #WH, activists and people i spoke to are either in #Idlib or #EuphratesShield areas.

Only one person was in #Damascus.

05:33 – 13 February 2019,” Dalati tweeted on his personal, verified Twitter account, which has since been made private. The thread can be found on Web Archive.

He further continued:

“Truth is James Harkin got the basics right in terms of Douma’s “propaganda” value. The ATTACK DID HAPPEN, Sarin wasn’t used, but we’ll have to wait for OPCW to prove Chlorine or otherwise. However, everything else around the attack was manufactured for maximum effect.”

He also gave some additional details:

“I can tell you that Jaysh al-Islam ruled Douma with an iron fist. They coopted activists, doctors and humanitarians with fear and intimidation. In fact, one of the 3 or 4 people filming the scene was Dr. Abu Bakr Hanan, a “brute and shifty” doctor affiliated with Jaysh Al-Islam. The narrative was that “there weren’t enough drs” but here is one filming and not taking part of the rescue efforts. Will keep the rest for later.”

Who Does Government Serve?

Whose interests are served when Pelosi sells out health care and Pompeo sells out peace?

The US health system is the most high cost and dysfunctional health care system in the world. The reason is that it is privatized. In the rest of Western civilization the system is socialized.

The reason health care is socialized in civilized countries is not only to provide health care to citizens who otherwise could not afford it, but also to reduce the cost. In a privatized system, a profit has to be turned at every level: the general practitioner, the specialist, the diagnostic facility, the ambulance service, the emergency room, the hospital, the hospice, the health insurance company. All of these levels of profit build up the cost.

In the hybrid system with which the US is afflicted, regulation drives the cost even higher. It is not only government regulation because of Medicare and Medicaid, but also private regulation imposed by private insurance companies. In America, alone in the world, medical care comes second to paperwork.

Doctors working in medical clinics have to dictate the results of each patient seen, the diagnosis, the treatment, and so forth, in sufficient detail to satisfy the payer of the bill, whether public or private. The dictation time eats into the doctor’s treatment time. In other words, the paper work requirements reduce the amount of time the doctor has to see patients. The paperwork also requires nurses to organize and compile it. And this is not the end of it.

Health care corporations employ people to monitor the doctors to make sure the physician dictates enough to create a record that Medicare, Medicaid, or the privat insurance company will accept as evidence of billable service.

Even a libertarian economist who views the massive costs upon costs of the American system cannot find any economies to attribute to private enterprise.

In a socialized health care system, none of the many levels require a profit in order to continue to operate. As there is no billing of Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance companies by private corporations, there is no need for the high cost of preventing fraud. Nurses and doctors can attend to patients instead of paperwork. Of course, in any system cost-saving regulations can expand cost-producing bureaucracies, and no system will work well without moral and virtue rules that instill a compassionate and responsible attitude on the part of health care providers.

There is no doubt whatsoever that the cost of health care in the US would diminish dramatically if the US had a socialized health care system in which there is no profit, no paperwork, only health care. And this is why it will not happen.

In the US system, health care is profitable to private interests. They are concerned with their profits, not with the cost of health care to people. It is profitable to all the fraud prevention, public and private, bureaucracies. It is profitable to the members of the US Senate and House of Representatives, as private health care companies are major donors.

If you doubt this, consider that Democrats, or many of them, say that they are for a single payer health care system, by which they mean a socialized health care system in which there is no profit and no regulatory cost. But they are not really in favor of such a system as the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi’s health policy aide made clear to private insurance company executives. Pelosi’s health care adviser, Wendell Primus, pledged Democratic Party support to the insurance industry in the fight against single-payer health care. https://theintercept.com/2019/02/05/nancy-pelosi-medicare-for-all/?utm_source=The+Intercept+Newsletter&utm_campaign=0df09bdfa1-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_02_09&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_e00a5122d3-0df09bdfa1-131966649

Mississippi Legislature passes bills to ban abortion after a baby's heartbeat is detected

The Mississippi Legislature on Wednesday passed bills to ban abortions after an unborn baby's heartbeat is detected — usually at about six weeks — Live Action reported.

The "heartbeat bills" passed by the state Senate and House offer no exceptions for victims of rape or incest, according to The Clarion Ledger. There are, however, exceptions if it is believed the pregnancy could cause serious harm or endanger a woman's life.

If either bill is ultimately agreed to and signed into law, abortions would be illegal in Mississippi as soon as a heartbeat is detected. Mississippi Republican Gov. Phil Bryant has said he would sign a bill banning abortion as early as six weeks.

What was the debate?

Republican Sen. Joey Fillingane presented the bill in the Senate, according to the Clarion Ledger. That prompted Democratic Sen. Derrick Simmons to ask Fillingane if he was aware that Mississippi has spent $1.2 million defending in court a previous 15-week abortion ban, which was struck down by a federal judge.

During discussion, Simmons began asking a question: "Do you think it's a wise use of taxpayer money—" but before he could finish, Fillingane interrupted and said, "Absolutely."

Republican Sen. Michael Watson defended his colleague by asking, "Is it worth $1.2 million? What is a life worth?"

Fillingane also said that with Justice Brett Kavanaugh on the U.S. Supreme Court, a different ruling could prevail.

"These decisions may swing in a very different decision now," Fillingane told Simmons.

Republican Sen. Angela Hill, one of the authors of the Senate's heartbeat bill, gave an emotional speech about the issue.

"Times are changing in this country," she said, the Clarion Ledger reported. "We can see more of what's happening in the womb. … We can see that heart beating with those tests and I've had those tests and they're not so bad."

"I see in this country that we protect sea turtle eggs and we protect other endangered species of animals with a greater degree of scrutiny and zealousness than we protect a child in the womb that has a beating heart," Hill continued. "The womb should be the safest place in the world for an unborn child. I'm asking Mississippi to be different."

Democratic Sen. Deborah Dawkins, a former nurse, called the idea of a heartbeat bill a "misnomer."

Israel May Look to Expand Covert War Against Iran Beyond Syria

Iran is reducing Syria presence, limiting targeting options

If there is one consistent fact about Israeli military policy, it is that they are always at least sort of at war with Iran. The Syrian War, and Iran’s advisory role there has made this fairly simple, as Israel just bombs Damascus a few times a month, insisting they’re hitting Iran.

But ISIS is defeated, and like everyone else, Iran is scaling back its involvement in Syria. That’s giving Israel fewer targets, and it’s a really inopportune time for that. With the Israeli election looming, officials are all keyed up to win votes with quasi-legal airstrikes.

That’s got some analysts predicting Israel will look for other Iranian targets outside of Syria. The simplest place would be Iraq, where US media outlets have spent years calling the Iraqi government’s paramilitary forces “Iran-backed militias.”

The number of US troops in Iraq may make this somewhat diplomatically dicey, though so far Israel has been able to count on the US to sign off on whatever attacks on whatever nominally Iranian targets they choose. And if it’s a choice between that and Israel not launching military strikes on a nearby country, its safe to bet the attacks will continue.

Cuba says U.S. moving special forces, preparing Venezuelan intervention

Cuba said on Thursday the United States was moving special forces closer to Venezuela as part of a covert plan to intervene in the chaotic South American country using the pretext of a humanitarian crisis.

A “Declaration of the Revolutionary Government” alleged that recent events in Venezuela amounted to an attempted coup that had so far failed.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration has been trying to pressure Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to step down and hand over power to Juan Guaido, the head of Venezuela’s National Assembly.

Guaido invoked a constitutional provision to assume the presidency three weeks ago, arguing that Maduro’s re-election last year was a sham.

These events, the declaration said, had led the United States to impose drastic sanctions causing damage “1,000 times greater” than the aid it is trying to force on the country.

“Between February 6 and 10 military transport aircraft have flown to the Rafael Miranda Airport of Puerto Rico, the San Isidro Air Base, in the Dominican Republic and to other strategically located Caribbean islands, probably without knowledge of the governments of those nations,” the declaration said.

“These flights originated in American military installations from which units of Special Operations and Marine Corps operate, which are used for covert actions,” it said.

U.S. special envoy for Venezuela Elliott Abrams, asked about the Cuban statement at an event in Washington, said “it is a new lie.”

The Dominican Republic’s Foreign Minister Miguel Vargas, in a statement issued from Italy where he is accompanying the country’s president, said no U.S. military transport planes had landed in his country. He also reiterated his government’s support for a peaceful solution to the Venezuelan crisis.

Venezuela, a major oil producer, is in the throes of a severe economic crisis with a dramatic drop in output and six-digit inflation wreaking havoc on the livelihoods of residents, sending an estimated 3 million of them seeking refuge in neighboring countries.

Israel’s Lieberman: Next confrontation with Gaza must be the last

Former Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman yesterday warned that the next confrontation with the Gaza Strip must be the last.

“For nearly a year, since the [Great March of Return] started along the Gaza Strip border fence, the most volatile Israeli border [has been] the one it shares with the Gaza Strip,” Lieberman said. He then explained that the military intelligence assessment published on Wednesday- which indicated that Israel is likely to face a major escalation with the Palestinians in Gaza or the West Bank within the next 12 months – is consistent with his assessment over the past year.

“The question now is not whether there will be another confrontation with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, but when will that happen,” he added.

Lieberman said he believed the Israeli government is responsible for “strengthening” the Palestinian resistance factions by not launching a war on the already-besieged Gaza Strip and by easing sanctions against it.

According to Lieberman, the transfer of funds and fuel to the Gaza Strip and expanding the fishing area all contribute to strengthening Hamas at both the military and civilian levels, and increase popular support for it in the occupied West Bank and Gaza.

“We must strike a hard and disproportionate blow on Hamas – completely break their willpower to continue to fight against us and destroy their belief that they could ever defeat us,” he added.

Meanwhile, Israel Hayom yesterday revealed a plan announced by the Chief of General Staff of the Israeli Army, General Aviv Kochavi, aimed at improving the Israeli army’s operational readiness in the Gaza Strip, at the expense of other sectors.

Gaza “will be the most explosive in the coming months” the newspaper quoted Kochavi as saying.

Far-right Tommy Robinson declares himself a ‘Zionist’ in leaked video

"If there's a war… I will be there…and I will fight for Israel", UK far right activist Tommy Robinson vows to go to war for Israel

Far-right, anti-Muslim, self-declared Zionist Tommy Robinson has boasted of his love for Israel in leaked video footage, in which the founder of the English Defence League (EDL) can be seen bragging about “scoring” drugs anywhere in the world.

The video – which is thought to have been filmed in Bologna, Italy last month – shows the 35-year-old right-wing activist walking down the street on his own.

In the selfie video Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, brags: “No matter where I’ve gone in the world, I score. I will show you tonight.” He then calls for a taxi to visit a pub, presumably to demonstrate that he can access drugs wherever he goes.

Boasting of his unique talent to “score” Robinson, despite a number of criminal convictions including cocaine possession, says: “I’ve gone to Qatar, I’ve gone to Doha and scored gear on the sesh [a night out] while they’re all praying.”

Judicial Watch: Docs Reveal FBI Cover Up of ‘Chart’ of Potential Violations of Law by Hillary Clinton

(Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch announced today it received 186 pages of records from the Department of Justice that include emails documenting an evident cover up of a chart of potential violations of law by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Judicial Watch obtained the records through a January 2018 Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit filed after the DOJ failed respond to a December 4, 2017 FOIA request (Judicial Watch v. U.S. Department of Justice (No. 1:18-cv-00154)). Judicial Watch is seeking all communications between FBI official Peter Strzok and FBI attorney Lisa Page.

The newly obtained emails came in response to a May 21 order by U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton to the FBI to begin processing 13,000 pages of records exchanged exclusively between Strzok and Page between February 1, 2015, and December 2017. The FBI may not complete review and production of all the Strzok-Page communications until at least 2020.

Three days after then-FBI Director James Comey’s press conference announcing that he would not recommend a prosecution of Mrs. Clinton, a July 8, 2016 email chain shows that, the Special Counsel to the FBI’s executive assistant director in charge of the National Security Branch, whose name is redacted, wrote to Strzok and others that he was producing a “chart of the statutory violations considered during the investigation [of Clinton’s server], and the reasons for the recommendation not to prosecute…”

[Redacted] writes: I am still working on an additional page for these TPs that consist of a chart of the statutory violations considered during the investigation, and the reasons for the recommendation not to prosecute, hopefully in non-lawyer friendly terms …

Strzok forwards to Page, Jonathan Moffa and others: I have redlined some points. Broadly, I have some concerns about asking some our [sic] senior field folks to get into the business of briefing this case, particularly when we have the D’s [Comey’s] statement as a kind of stand alone document. In my opinion, there’s too much nuance, detail, and potential for missteps. But I get they may likely be asked for comment.

[Redacted] writes to Strzok, Page and others: The DD [Andrew McCabe] will need to approve these before they are pushed out to anyone. At the end of last week, he wasn’t inclined to send them to anyone. But, it’s great to have them on the shelf in case they’re needed.
