WASHINGTON, D.C. — Democratic Gov.-elect J.B. Pritzker met with President Donald Trump on Thursday as part of a discussion with newly elected governors.
The incoming governor sat two seats to Trump’s right at the White House meeting, and the president said “most of them have become stars, if not all.”
“Because you won,” Trump said. “Winning is a wonderful thing.”
Pritzker introduced himself to the roundtable of to-be freshman governors, bringing up his founding of tech incubator 1871.
“And as I’ve been speaking with your daughter, I’ve also been a national advocate for early childhood education,” Pritzker said.
Soon afterward, the meeting was made private after Trump took a couple questions about his chief of staff search and special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.
Pritzker spokeswoman Jordan Abudayyeh said the governor-elect was “invited to the White House and will be taking this opportunity to advocate for Illinois.”
“As J.B. said on the campaign trail, he will work with Democrats and Republicans to bring more federal dollars back to the state and fight for policies that benefit working families,” she said.
Pritzker also said on the campaign trail that “Illinois will be a firewall against Donald Trump’s destructive and bigoted agenda.”
Despite the attacks, it’s not unusual for newly elected leaders to meet. Soon after Trump was elected president, Mayor Rahm Emanuel met with him at the president’s namesake Manhattan tower. Since then, the mayor’s administration has sued Trump’s multiple times over immigration and other issues.
Pritzker throughout the campaign hammered Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner over Trump. Rauner had a complicated relationship with the president, refusing to say his name for much of his term but later showing up to a late-campaign Trump rally in southern Illinois.
Pritzker and Rauner both have said the transition to the Democrat’s Jan. 14 inauguration is going smoothly.
