the Earth and Moon are a double planet, anon. The 'distance' of the moon is from the pull of the Earth and the Sun. The Moon always moves 'forward' in it's orbit around the Sun. And it weaves in and out of the Orbit of The Earth, which is always weaving, slightly, because of the Moon.
The center of mass of the two objects? that would be some where between their own centers.
and as The Moon proceeds, it's distance from the Earth varies by a known amount. Sometimes it is closer, sometimes it is farther. And when it is farther it seems 'smaller' than The Sun, as measured by degrees of arc as viewed from the ground on Earth. But also has to do with where on Earth, too.
So how is it 'the same size' as the sun. Of course it isn't. And no one says it is. It's the same size in the view from the ground on Earth some of the time.
Issac Azimov in his little book titled Astronomy discusses that the Earth and Moon are really a double planet. Most of what I tell you hear I gleaned from that.
