A federal judge just denied a request for Natalia Veselnitskaya to enter the US

A federal judge in New York has denied a request for Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya to enter the US to represent her client, Prevezon, in court.

“Prevezon offers very little, if anything, to justify its request,” the judge wrote on Friday.

The judge said in his ruling on Friday that, had Prevezon not settled in May, “the trial would have showcased a tale of international intrigue.”

A federal judge in New York has denied a request by the Russian-owned real-estate firm Prevezon to grant temporary immigration parole to its lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, according to a court document filed late Friday afternoon.

Prevezon has still not paid the $US5.9 million it owes the US government as part of a civil forfeiture settlement the parties reached in May, according to the government. Prosecutors now want to re-open the case in New York, and Prevezon wants Veselnitskaya there for the proceedings.

But Judge William H. Pauley III ruled on Friday that “in-person meetings with counsel… do not justify the exercise of its immigration parole authority.”

“Prevezon offers very little, if anything, to justify its request,” Pauley wrote.

The Prevezon case was set to go to trial in New York in May but was suddenly settled for $US5.9 million three days before the first court date.

The government described the settlement as a victory against corruption, but Prevezon characterised it as proof that the company had done nothing wrong. It said it considered the “surprise” offer from prosecutors “too good to refuse.”

“It was a surprise,” said John Dillard, a spokesman for Prevezon’s attorneys. “We were getting ready for opening statements and fully expected to try the case. In fact, we were looking forward to it.”

Over five months later, however, Prevezon has still not paid — and the company will have to go back to court without Veselnitskaya there.

Pauley implied in his ruling on Friday that Prevezon should have been eager to pay the $US5.9 million because, absent settlement, “the trial would have showcased a tale of international intrigue — a massive tax fraud in Russia resulting in the transfer of $US230 million through a Byzantine web of shell companies.”

The investigation into whether Prevezon, which is incorporated in Cyprus, laundered millions of dollars into New York City property garnered high-profile attention given its ties to a $US230 million Russian tax-fraud scheme and Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, whose suspicious death aroused international media attention.

The US government had been investigating the $US230 million scheme that Magnitsky uncovered — and what happened to the proceeds — for nearly four years. Prosecutors said the funds from the elaborate scheme had been laundered via shell companies and real-estate purchases.

The trail ultimately led to Manhattan, where Preet Bharara, then the US attorney there, accused Prevezon in September 2013 of receiving “at least $US1,965,444 in proceeds from the $US230 million fraud scheme” in early 2008 via wire transfers from at least two suspected shell companies through the Southern District of New York. The company then invested those funds “in various New York properties,” according to the complaint.

Pauley wrote on Friday that “in view of recent revelations regarding Russia’s outsized influence, there may have been more to this money laundering case than a few luxury condominiums at 20 Pine Street.”

Veselnitskaya famously attended a meeting last June at Trump Tower with several of Donald Trump’s campaign advisers — Donald Trump Jr., Paul Manafort and Jared Kushner. She brought with her a memo that closely mirrored one written by the Russian prosecutor’s office two months earlier, suggesting she was dispatched to the meeting with the Kremlin’s blessing — or under its direction.

Russian attorney, who attended Trump Tower meeting, indicted for obstructing real estate money laundering investigation

The lawyer's client, Prevezon Holdings, was accused of laundering millions into luxury Manhattan properties

A Russian attorney who met with Donald Trump Jr. during the 2016 presidential campaign has been indicted for obstructing a federal investigation into a New York money laundering scheme, according to a complaint unsealed Tuesday in Manhattan court.

Natalie Veselnitskaya had been the defense attorney for real estate company Prevezon Holdings, which in 2013 was accused by U.S. prosecutors of laundering millions in stolen Russian money into Manhattan luxury properties, including condominiums at 20 Pine Street in the Financial District.

Before the case went to trial, Veselnitskaya’s clients settled, and in February of last year were ordered to pay $6 million. But in today’s unveiled complaint, prosecutors allege the Russian attorney provided the American court with falsified reports presented as authentic Russian government findings that denied the United States’ claims against Prevezon.

The New York Times first reported on the unsealed complaint.

In the Prevezon case, prosecutors alleged that laundered money came from a more than $200 million Russian tax fraud scheme, in which American hedge fund manager Bill Browder, and his firm Hermitage Capital, were said to be framed by Russian officials, who issued phony tax rebates and pocketed the sums for themselves. The fracas culminated in the mysterious death of Hermitage’s accountant, Sergei Magnitsky, in a Russian prison in 2009. Those events led the US Congress to pass the Magnitsky Act, which sanctioned high-ranking Russian officials believed to be responsible.

Veselnitskaya, Prevezon’s now indicted attorney, is better known as a subject of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into President Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and potential collusion with Russian individuals. In 2016, Veselnitskaya met with Donald Trump Jr, campaign manager Paul Manafort and Jared Kushner at Trump Tower. The meeting was ostensibly held to discuss potential opposition research on Hillary Clinton, but ultimately to lobby them on the Magnitsky Act, Donald Trump, Jr. later said. Trump, Jr. had first been pitched the meeting by an English publicist, who described Veselnitskaya as connected to “the Crown prosecutor of Russia” in an email.

Stacey Abrams Claims Voter Suppression Is Legal In The US

Failed Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams claimed that voter suppression is legal throughout the country during her speech at the Democratic National Committee’s winter meeting.

“Here’s the thing about voter suppression: Voter suppression is legal in the United States right now,” Abrams said Friday to a crowd of Democrats in Washington, D.C. “We’re used to fighting against enemies that are supposed to be unlawful, but the problem with a lot of what they do is they take legal actions and bastardize them and manipulate them until the rights they are supposed to protect are no longer visible.”

The comments followed a consistent complaint Abrams has made since losing her gubernatorial bid to then-Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp in November. Kemp, a Republican, defeated Abrams by a margin of over 54,700 votes on Election Day, but Abrams maintains he was only able to do so by suppressing black and Democratic voters.

During her speech to DNC members, Abrams backed up her claims by citing four black people in the state who waited a long time to vote.

“What we do know is that in the state of Georgia, four black men and women stood in line for four hours to cast a vote. That’s a poll tax,” she said, referencing a long-outlawed practice some U.S. jurisdictions used to keep poor and minority citizens from voting. “When you have to sacrifice four hours of work on the off-chance that you make it through and get to cast a ballot, that’s a poll tax.”

Abrams — a former romance novelist who previously served as the minority leader of the Georgia House of Representatives — has used her claims of voter suppression to form Fair Fight Action, a new voting rights group that is currently suing the state of Georgia over its election laws. The lawsuit targets the curtailing of early voting periods in the state. However, as a state representative, Abrams supported the shortening of early voting times as it was a financial burden on poorer counties.

Despite her rampant claims of voter suppression while speaking at the DNC event, Abrams began her speech by extolling the sky-high turnout of minority voters who supported her in November.

Putin Provides Macron With Data On Staged Chemical Weapons Provocations In Syria

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin provided his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron with information regarding the militants’ preparations to stage chemical weapons provocations in Syria’s Idlib during a phone call on February 16.

“Vladimir Putin and Emmanuel Macron discussed the developments in northeastern Syria and in the Idlib de-escalation zone. The President of Russia cited the available data on the militants’ preparations to stage provocations with the use of chemical agents,” the Russian Presidency office said in an official statement.

According to the statement, Putin also informed Macron of the agreements reached in Sochi on February 14. The two leaders noted need to promote the intra-Syrian political dialogue and to launch the work of the Constitutional Committee as soon as possible.

“The parties expressed mutual commitment to continuing Russian-French contacts on Syria in order to facilitate the peace settlement and assist in the country’s return to peaceful life,“ the statement added.

From its side, the French Presidency said that Macron told Putin during the call that France is focusing on continuing the fight against ISIS remnants, protecting civilians and providing “complete, safe, and unobstructed access to humanitarian aid to civilian populations.”

Under the leadership of Macron, France adopted a more radical approach on Syria. The European country participated in a strike against Damascus government forces in 2018 and stepped up its military presence in the war-torn country. Nonetheless, the recent developments in Syria forced France to work on improving coordination with Russia regarding the conflict.

Al-Shabaab Attacks US Base In Somalia, Claims 3 US Soldiers Died (Map)

On February 15, al-Shabaab militants attacked Baledogle Military Airfield in Lower Shebelle province, where US Marines train local forces that should fight al-Shabaab, according to the terrorist group’s media wing.

In its statement, al-Shabaab claimed that 3 US personnel and 5 members of US-trained forces were killed in a mortar attack. The US military has not commented on these claims so far.

Baledogle Military Airfield is located 110 km northwest of the Somali capital Mogadishu. It’s often described as a base for Somali special commandos.

In 2018, the US Defense Department contributed a $12 million contract for “emergency runway repairs” at the Baledogle base. This effort appears to be linked to the recently increased US activity in the region. Over the past year, the US increased intensity of airstrikes on al-Shabaab militants in Somalia. Despite this, the terrorist group still remains a powerful force influencing situation in the country.

Nasrallah: Warsaw meet unmasked Israel-Gulf ties, Arab leaders Israel’s ‘tools’

Referencing dispute over IDF readiness for war, Hezbollah chief says Israelis ‘don’t trust’ army; ‘They know we can enter Galilee, they’re not sure they can enter our land’

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on Saturday dismissed last week’s Middle East conference in Warsaw as “weak and stale,” and warned that Arab leaders moving toward normalization with Israel were only “a tool” in Israel’s hands.

In a speech marking the terror group’s annual remembrance day for “martyrs,” Nasrallah said the summit in Poland, which focused strongly on Iran’s belligerence in the region, aimed to “rally against Iran and the resistance movements in the region… The enemies are trying to rally the world to conspire against the resistance after their wars failed to eradicate it.”

He said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was “speaking from the heart” when he talked at the conference of seeking “war with Iran,” a statement that has been characterized as a mistranslation of Netanyahu’s original Hebrew comments.

But Nasrallah asserted that “today Iran is a strong state and stronger than anyone who targets it with war.”
