GOP Senators don’t show up for free speech hearing, Dems blame Trump for campus violence

It wasn’t a good showing for Senate Republicans last week. A congressional hearing that addressed free speech on college campuses failed young conservatives, as only three Republican senators attended to make remarks on the issue.

Eight GOP committee members on the committee did not show up and Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) didn’t stay long enough to hear the opening statements.

The free speech debate on college campuses has disproportionately affected young conservatives. A 2016 study found that liberal university professors outnumber conservatives by a ratio of almost 12 to 1. Across the nation, left-leaning professors and college administrators have discouraged political diversity on campuses.

Republicans have spoken out against the political inequality in higher education, but when it came time to address the issue in Congress the majority of GOP members didn’t show up. In Thursday’s hearing, Democrats outnumbered Republicans by almost two to one. Chairman of the Committee Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Senator Todd Young (R-IN), and Sen. Johnny Isakson (GA) were the three GOP members that discussed the issue with the panel. Red Alert Politics contacted the Senator’s offices who did not attend for comment. Most of the senator’s offices cited scheduling conflicts.

Vietnam police unveil security plans for Kim-Trump summit

HANOI (DPA) - North Korean and United States officials landed in Hanoi on Saturday (Feb 16) as all three countries prepare for the upcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, state media reported.

The two delegations are expected to organise logistical coordination for the summit, the VnExpress news site reported.

Hanoi police also said they would dispatch 96 patrol groups to crack down on crime in the 10 days preceding the summit. City landmarks will also be put on round-the-clock police surveillance.

Security for the summit is expected to be tight. While the risk of terrorism is considered extremely low in Vietnam, the capital's density makes the city harder for bodyguards on both the North Korean and US teams to secure their bosses.

Lindsey Graham on “Face the Nation” vows to hold hearing on Andrew McCabe 25th Amendment comments on “60 Minutes”

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said he will hold a hearing about comments made by former Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe about an apparent discussion of the possibility of using the 25th Amendment to remove President Trump from office.

In an interview with “60 Minutes” set to air Sunday evening, McCabe said Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein raised the issue shortly after the firing of FBI Director James Comey in 2017. The 25th Amendment provides a process for removing a president who is “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.”

McCabe told “60 Minutes” that Rosenstein “raised the issue and discussed it with me in the context of thinking about how many other cabinet officials might support such an effort.”

“The whole point of Congress existing is to provide oversight of the executive branch,” Graham said on “Face the Nation” Sunday. “So through good reporting by ’60 Minutes,’ there’s an allegation by the acting FBI director at the time that the deputy attorney general was basically trying to do an administrative coup, take the president down to the 25th Amendment process. The deputy attorney general denies it. So I promise your viewers the following, that we will have a hearing about who’s telling the truth, what actually happened.”

He added, “I’m going to do everything I can to get to the bottom of the Department of Justice FBI behavior toward President Trump and his campaign.”

Successful campaign against the UN Global Migration Compact

Hungarian daily Magyar Hirlap interviewed Austrian identitarian leader Martin Sellner about his campaign against the UN Global Compact for Migration.

According to the right-wing activist, his campaign – in which he managed to collect tens thousands of signatures and conducted a successful poster campaign – “was the first big success of the patriotic civil society in Western Europe”.

He pointed out that back in last September, nobody knew about the Compact, but two months later, when he was running the campaign in German-speaking countries, “the majority of Austrians and Germans knew about it and rejected it”.

He also spoke about the new campaign of the Austrian Generation Identity (IBÖ), which they launched after the activists of the movement were acquitted from all charges by the court of Graz.

Hungarian minister summons Swedish ambassador over Family Plan

Hungary’s foreign ministry has summoned the Swedish ambassador over critical remarks by a Swedish minister concerning the Hungarian government’s recent family assistance measures, the foreign minister said.

In a tweet, Annika Strandhall, the Swedish minister for social affairs, said that Hungary’s “alarming” policies were “reeking of the 1930’s.”

She suggested the Hungarian prime minister, who she said seeks to promote the birth of “more true Hungarian” babies, was a “right-wing populist trying to obscure the consequences of those policies to the independence women have fought for.”

Answering a question at a press conference on a different subject, minister of Foreign Affairs Peter Szijjarto said Strandhall had used an “unacceptable” tone in her tweet. He said the Swedish ambassador had been told at the ministry that Strandhall’s comments, too, were unacceptable.

Since the United States of America is and has been one of the most religious countries over the last 200+ years, if the atheists are correct, the U.S.A. should have been involved in the largest number of religious wars of any other nation. In fact, the United States has been involved in 17 wars, only one of which (the current "War on Terror") has any religious entanglement. The number of Americans who have died as the result of religious wars is 14.2/year, which is less than the number of people who die yearly from dog bites.
