‘I didn’t need to do this’: How Trump may have sabotaged himself over national emergency

Donald Trump has been threatened with legal action after he declared a national emergency. But with just six words, he may have damaged his own case.

Gavin Fernando@gavindfernando news.com.auFEBRUARY 18, 20197:53PM

The debate over whether US President Donald Trump was justified in calling a national emergency has been a hotly-contested one.

But Mr Trump may have just settled the discussion himself — by publicly stating it wasn’t actually necessary to do so.

“I didn’t need to do this,” he told reporters shortly before signing a proclamation to declare the emergency.

He was responding to a question from NBC’s Peter Alexander, who noted Mr Trump criticised former president Barack Obama in 2014 for using executive orders to enact his immigration agenda.

“I could do the wall over a longer period of time,” Mr Trump said in response. “I didn’t need to do this, but I’d rather do it much faster.”

The candid contradiction isn’t merely a “gotcha!” moment. It could actually be used against the President in a legal sense by those seeking to challenge his grounds to call a national emergency over the border.

According to USA Today, legal proceedings have already been filed in response to the declaration by two separate watchdog groups.

Under the National Emergencies Act of 1976, presidents have the broad authority to declare a national emergency and bypass Congress.

But according to legal experts, Mr Trump now has to justify the declaration by proving it is “essential to the national defence” by pointing out which of the more than 120 statutes are actually triggered by a national emergency.

University of Alabama law professor Joyce Alene described his statement as “a gift to all the lawyers preparing to sue him”……

Chinese scientists develop smart windows to clean air pollution 18 February 2019 14:56

WASHINGTON. KAZINFORM - Chinese scientists have developed a large-scale transparent smart window that can change light intensity while effectively capturing the particulate matter in smog, said a study published on Saturday in the journal iScience, Xinhua reports. The study described a simple solution-based process to fabricate large-area flexible transparent windows with Ag-nylon electrodes for high-efficiency PM2.5 capture. It takes only 20 minutes to fabricate 7.5 square meters of Ag-nylon flexible transparent windows showing an optical transmittance of over 86 percent, according to the group of scientists led by Yu Shuhong from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). The Ag-nylon mesh can not only change the indoor light intensity, but also purify indoor air as a high-efficiency PM2.5 filter. The scientists found that the obtained Ag-nylon electrodes could be used as an ideal intelligent thermochromic smart window with excellent mechanical stability. It remains stable after undergoing a bending test with 10,000 bending cycles with a minimum bending radius of 2.0 millimeters. Also, the Ag-nylon electrodes can remove PM2.5 by 99.65 percent while remaining stable even after 100 cycles of PM filtration and a cleaning process, according to the study. The design could lay the foundation for next-generation flexible transparent smart windows that can reduce air pollution.

Seventeen Filipino crew members rescued from a jigger on fire in Falklands' waters arrived in Montevideo

Monday, February 18th 2019 - 09:34 UTCFull article0 comments

Seventeen Filipino crew members have arrived safe and sound to Montevideo, following the 11 February fire and loss of their Taiwanese flagged jigger in Falkland Islands waters last week. “Jun Rong” had a total crew of 69, and 64 were rescued and taken to the capital of Uruguay where they underwent medical attention, and are waiting to fly back to their homes.

Unfortunately, the five missing crewmembers are Filipinos, and nothing more is known about what could have happened and if they are still alive. The rest of the crew was made up of 28 Indonesian, 9 Vietnamese, 5 Burmese, four from Taiwan and one from China. A sister jigger Liang Rong brought the 64 survivors to Montevideo. The rescue operation was supported by Falklands' Fisheries Patrol vessel Protegat and the Falklands' patrol vessel HMS Clyde.

According to reports from the Falkland Islands, a distress call was first received at 8:23am on Monday 11 February from the FIC local agent. After subsequent discussions by the Marine Officer with the management company in Taiwan it is understood Taiwan received information about the fire approximately one hour earlier at 7:20am.

On receiving the initial call the Fishery Patrol vessel Protegat was immediately directed to proceed at full speed towards the vessel giving an initial ETA of 9.00pm which was later amended to 3.00pm. Other volunteer support vessels were also informed of the incident and called upon for assistance. Silver Command was established at 12.15pm once more information was received. The plan developed as further information became available however, initially the report indicated that all crew had abandoned ship and it was not until sometime later that it was informed that there were five crew men unaccounted for.

Two humanitarian corridors for Syria’s Rukban refugee camp to be opened early on Feb 19

"Where will they pull out to, will someone else replace them, who will they leave the arms, will their presence continue? When they pull out, their presence will most probably not end, it will continue in some way," Peskov said.

"All these questions are on the agenda, the presidents are talking about them. The general attitude is the same, there is no reason for optimism, and uncertainty is troubling. And this situation is not helping the crisis in Syria and hope for a solution at all," the spokesman emphasized.

On December 19, 2018, US President Donald Trump said that the United States had defeated ISIS (Islamic State, a terrorist organization banned in Russia) in Syria, which was the only reason for the US troops being there, so all US troops would be pulled out of Syria. According to US officials, the US would withdraw its entire force of 2,000 service members from Syria within 60 to 100 days.
