There was an unsuccessful assassination attempt around 60 days into his presidency. Reagan experienced the same anger and violent protests from the press and certain segments of the electorate that Trump does today.
Dems and never-Reagan Reps greatly feared and hated him. They wanted the guy gone but couldn't pull off the same operation that was done to the Trump team because the technology and inter-connectivity didn't exist yet.
When President Boris Yeltsin opened up the Soviet archives in the early 1990s, documents showed Sen. Ted Kennedy had been communicating with high-level Soviets behind the president's back and sought their assistance in trying to sabotage Reagan's reelection.
