I should have added that the rifles were usually kept handy. Above the front door, over the fireplace, etc. loaded for quick action in case of a prowling Grizzly, a sudden Indian attack, raiders and generally for unsavory visitors. It would often save a family’s life and deter those who expected a loaded musket to be kept handy in a household.
