How corporations became 'persons'

The amazing true story of a legal fiction that undermines American democracy.

“Corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed.”

Sound like a protester railing against the World Trade Organization? Think again. These are the words of a successful corporate lawyer who represented railroads before becoming president of the United States. They resonate for many people in this Era of Enron, when huge hot-stock corporations have cooked deals with the aid of their auditors and Wall Street bankers to enrich executives at the expense of their employees and shareholders, when corporate lobbyists and campaign donors so often have their way despite the interests of the voters, and when Federal Reserve figures show that the top 1 percent of U.S. households controls 38 percent of the nation’s wealth. But these words were [purportedly] written in an 1864 letter, by Abraham Lincoln.*

Facebook accused of acting like 'digital gangsters' in a devastating report by lawmakers

From Businessinsider.com: “Facebook accused of acting like 'digital gangsters' in a devastating report by lawmakers”. Below is an excerpt from the article.

British lawmakers have accused Facebook of behaving like "digital gangsters", abusing its dominant power in social networks, and behaving "ahead of and beyond the law."

The comments come in a devastating report on fake news by British Parliament's Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee, made up of cross-party UK politicians and led by Conservative MP Damian Collins.

Facebook deliberately flouted privacy and competition laws and should be subject to new regulation, the committee wrote.

Lawmakers accused Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg of showing "contempt" for UK Parliament, and a larger gathering of international parliaments after he refused to give evidence three times.

The report is the culmination of a sprawling, 18-month parliamentary investigation into disinformation and fake news online, which heard from 73 witnesses and received 170 written submissions.

Google and Facebook should be regulated for news content, UK government report says

Posted By TheNewsCommenter: From Cnbc.com: “Google and Facebook should be regulated for news content, UK government report says”. Below is an excerpt from the article.

Online platforms including Google, Facebook and Apple should be regulated in how they distribute news content, according to a new U.K. government report.

The report, published Tuesday, said a state regulator should ensure tech firms are taking steps to help users identify trustworthy, reliable news on their platforms. It said the regulator would require companies like Facebook and Google to build on initiatives they have already established to weed out fake content.

"This task is too important to leave entirely to the judgment of commercial entities," the report said.

Online sites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have been under fire for allowing fake content to spread on their platforms. The companies have been investing in security measures to eliminate false accounts and misinformation, but the U.K. government report said these efforts should be enforced by a government agency. It also said they should sign a "code of conduct" to govern their commercial agreements with publishers.

"The experience of the last decade has shown that it is perfectly possible for social media platforms to be immensely profitable while simultaneously carrying a large quantity of fake news," it said.
