At the end of Philoctetes, Odysseus fails to convince the archer, who had been abandoned by the Greeks earlier, to join the Trojan War effort. He slinks offstage in defeat only to be saved the appearance of Heracles, whose divine command compels Philoctetes to lend his bow to the cause. A true Deus Ex Machina. Some would say it's a cheap ending.
There exists an alternative interpretation for the most astute students of the classics, though. Odysseus, as we know, is a master of disguises and deception. The Trojan horse plan is just one example. He uses tricks, deception, and cleverness to get his way. His patron goddess is Athena, or Minerva-the goddess of wisdom, whose symbol is
THE OWL
Athena uses her powers to transfigure and disguise Odysseus and the end of Homer's Odyssey, and in the opening of Ajax to make the eponymous hero hallucinate and see sheep as people. She is the goddess of wisdom, but as far as her protection of Odysseus goes, she is also the goddess of lies, illusion, disguises, and subterfuge.
Odysseus, being a clever deceiver under Athena's protection, would never have been defeated so easily as he was in Philoctetes. We can infer that Heracles was really Odysseus in disguise. He lied to Philoctetes to get his bow for the war effort. He propagandized and tricked him with an appeal to the gods.
THIS IS THE MEANING OF THE OWL
They are Odysseus. We are Philoctetes. Or Ajax. Or the Trojans.
