The Bohemian Club
Though The Bohemian Club we would want to join is the original one, which was founded in 1872 as a place for journalists, artists, and musicians to congregate, discuss the arts, and mix with people like Mark Twain, Ambrose Bierce, and Jack London, our curiosity is still piqued by the current extremely exclusive iteration. Sure, now it consists exclusively of rich, conservative white dudes and is basically a secret society, but who doesn’t want to know more about those?
Here’s what we do know:
The club currently has two locations, the original city clubhouse on the corner of Post and Taylor and The Bohemian Grove, a “campground” in a private forest in Sonoma County. The clubhouse is a six-story building, contains dining rooms, meeting rooms, an art gallery, a theater, a library, a bar, and guest rooms.
The Grove is 2,700-acres of forest filled with Douglas firs and redwoods, a man-made lake, a 40-foot stone “Owl Shrine,” and 118 camps. The latter is where members gather for two weeks every year to drink excessively, talk shop, bond, and, according to a 2009 Vanity Fair article, possibly illegally log some of the old-growth forest.
Over time, members of The Bohemian Club have included the likes of George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Bing Crosby, Clint Eastwood, Merv Griffin, Robert Mondavi, John Muir, Steve Miller, and Walter Cronkite. And it’s only because we can’t imagine spending two-debauchery-filled weeks in the woods with men like these that the club even made this list. It’s definitely not “cool,” but it certainly is crazy. And membership would offer a glimpse into an exclusive world, as well as access to power and influence not available to most.
Want to join? Well, first of all, you’d better be a man, since The Bohemian Club doesn’t admit the fairer sex. Second, you’d better be wealthy, influential, and know the right people. It also won’t hurt if you’re Republican and white and willing to wait up to 15 years for an opening, since the club is limited to 2700 members total. Finally, you’d better be willing to part with the $25,000 initiation fee as well as some pretty staggering yearly dues. As well as a little bit of your soul. But that probably goes without saying.
