It's a lifetime appointment, and it's likely she could argue that "proof of life" isn't as necessary as "proof of death." she could be a brain in a bottle, so long as it can sit and listen (be fed information) and it didn't NEED to deliberate, it could continue a term until the plug was pulled. there's no illegality to it, it's the argument in Neuromancer, that if the wintermute gets to America, physically, it's a person under the 14th amendment.
