WASHINGTON — The White House has nominated a longtime NASA center director and former acting administrator to be the next director of the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO).

Christopher J. Scolese is director of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. He was named to the position effective March 5, 2012.[1] On February 7, 2019, President Donald Trump nominated Scolese to head the National Reconnaissance Office.[2]

The National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) develops and operates space reconnaissance systems and conducts intelligence-related activities for U.S. national security.[8]
NRO coordinates collection and analysis of information from airplane and satellite reconnaissance by the military services and the Central Intelligence Agency.[9]
It is funded through the National Reconnaissance Program, which is part of the National Intelligence Program (formerly known as the National Foreign Intelligence Program). The agency is part of the Department of Defense.
