>> In the past one American who was willing to work could support a family even if he basically had no marketable skills. Today… two with college degrees sometimes have trouble.

True; however, consider how much higher people's lifestyle expectations are. Much larger houses, everyone has internal plumbing, air conditioning, at least two vehicles, etc. My parents' generation had much more modest expectations from a single wage earner, and children often worked and contributed their earning toward family expenses.

I'm well aware of the theft or our lives via debasing the currency, but I'm also aware of inflated expectations of a much more consumer-oriented culture.

Children still work and earn money, shoveling snow, pet sitting, babysitting, house cleaning, etc. It's just that it's all under the table now, cash; and, more significantly, the children view the money as "theirs," ignoring needs of the family as a whole.

I remember a time about a year ago, when a newly-minted baker posted that he was glad Q wasn't posting, since it was his first bread. Then, within minutes, *bang Q posted, the bread flew, and the poor baker was probably cleaning his drawers.

Repeat post or not, I agree with this. The post doen't mention how the entire system is warped by the imbalance of power between police/prosecutors and accused/public defender. The plea bargain has become the stock in trade of the "justice system," and more often than not it results in miscarriage of justice.

Prosecutors pile on all the charges they can, even inventing things which aren't warranted by the alleged actions; then the accused is intimidated into signing a plea bargain for things s/he didn't do, just to avoid the terrible consequences threatened by the prosecutor.

Prosecutorial abuses abound, as do police interrogator abuses. Then there's the problem that courts have allowed officers to lie to accused people and IN COURT, under OATH; while the accused is found guilty of a crime if s/he lies to any official at any time under any circumstances.

The system is broken; many innocent people (or people who did something, but not nearly what they were charged with) are rotting in prison for years, then face diminished lives one they are finally released.

While in custody, they are taught not to take responsibility for themselves and be self-reliant; but rather to deflect blame onto others (as a matter of survival) and to accept egregious invasions of their privacy, up to and including their body cavities. None of this prepares prisoners for life as a free, contributing, responsible citizen once the sentence has been served.

Bringing this back to Trump, I was encouraged when he began talking of real prison reform. Since the DOJ is such a disaster, it seems he'll need to start at the top. Also, I pray that Trump's SCOTUS picks return dignity and privacy to the people.

Sentencing guidelines are definitely out of whack. When it comes to "the war on drugs," they always have been. When I was in high school, in the location in which I then lived, a person could be charged with a felony if found in possession of a single cannabis seed. One. Seed. - Felony. Think about that. There are still people out there who are branded as felons for such a trivial infraction.

Meanwhile, we have people who kidnap and terrorize toddlers, then literally rip the skin off their faces, then murder to poor children and eat the bodies. And such people walk among us, receiving generous donations by people who cannot wait to elevate the monsters to positions of control over us all.
