I agree to a point but, I see the surgeries as an attempt to erase his past and create a whole new person. It wasn't done to him but a result of what WAS done to him, in the past.

When in kindergarten, I got to go to a bread making factory with the class and we were each given a tiny loaf of bread in a wrapper. About the size of 2 twinkies put together. I remember the bread truck going down the street and the milkman delivering milk.
That loaf was always a treasure to me. Silly to think of it now. This was in the late 50's.
