Just think of the monumental stupidity of his actions and now he gets to live through the humiliation of those actions. He will lose his job and any ability to be taken seriously for the rest of his life. I doubt prison will cause him any more harm than that is going on in his mind right now.
Think of the trial if he doesn't pleas out. It will be a complete circus. He would be thinking of suicide.
