Arrested US investor faces 10 years in Russian prison for major fraud
The founder and senior partner of Baring Vostok private equity fund, Michael Calvey, has been officially charged with a large-scale fraud involving a Russian bank, TASS cites a source in Russian law enforcement as saying.
The US citizen, who was put in pre-trial custody by a Moscow court, could get up to 10 years in prison along with a fine of up to one million rubles (US$15,000) over alleged participation in the fraud scheme, which involved Russia’s Vostochny Bank.
The court had previously rejected Calvey’s request to release him on five-million-ruble bail. The prosecutors insisted that the detention was an absolute necessity, as the detainee might flee the country. Calvey’s attorney reportedly vowed to challenge the detention order

Shaaban: World started to realize scale of disinformation against Syria
Moscow, SANA- Presidential Political and Media Advisor Bouthaina Shaaban said that the US and its allies are working to prolong the war on Syria through supporting terrorism and impeding reaching a political solution to crisis in the country.
This came in a statement to the Syrian media on the sidelines of Valdai Discussion Club’s Middle East Conference in Moscow on Wednesday.
“We managed to highlight Syria’s view and the injustice done to it over the past eight years, in addition to the role played by the US and its allies to prolong the war on Syria through supporting terrorism and hindering a political solution to the crisis there,” Shaaban said.
She noted that Valdai’s current session is one of the most important conferences as there are dozens of research centers, diplomats and thinkers participating in it.
Shaaban affirmed that the world has started to realize the scale of disinformation practiced by the Western media against Syria, adding that it has been observed in Valdai’s current session that everyone knows the reality of the disinformation and many are glad to have got acquainted with the real viewpoint coming from Syria.

House will vote in March to block Trump's border emergency
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is urging Democrats to sign onto a resolution to block President Trump’s decision to declare a national emergency at the southern border, and said the House will vote on the measure next month.
“President Trump’s emergency declaration proclamation undermines the separation of powers and Congress’s power of the purse, a power exclusively reserved by the text of the Constitution to the first branch of government, the Legislative branch, a branch co-equal to the Executive,” Pelosi, D-Calif., wrote to House Democrats this week.
Trump last week declared a national emergency in order to take $3.6 billion out of the military construction budget and use it to construct physical barriers along the southern border.
Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, last week introduced a joint resolution to revoke the national emergency.
Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., plans to hold a hearing on Trump’s declaration when Congress returns next week.

Smallpox, one of the most infectious diseases known to man, was officially eradicated in 1980, but two officially known samples of the disease are held in secure laboratories in the US and Russia.
The team’s simulation began with a smallpox bioterrorist attack in Fiji; the first case is reported in a private hospital but is not diagnosed properly as doctors are unfamiliar with the (now effectively-extinct) disease. The hypothetical outbreak then spreads to 200 people, of which roughly 40 percent die.

Pro-independence activists in Catalonia are venting their anger at Madrid’s trial of the region’s provincial leaders. Baton-wielding police scuffled with some of the demonstrators as people also blocked roads and set tires ablaze.
The group behind the protest is called the Committees for the Defence of the Republic (CDRs) and has been involved in demonstrations against Spain’s central government for months. The goal of Thursday’s action is to ‘paralyze everything,’ as the group put it.

Two dead in Munich construction site shooting, police says no sign of terrorism
Two men were shot dead in the southern German city of Munich on Thursday but there were no indications that it was a terrorist attack, a police spokesman said.
Germany has been on high alert since December 2016, when a Tunisian asylum seeker with Islamist links hijacked a truck, killed the driver and then ploughed it into a crowded market place in Berlin, killing 11 more people and injuring dozens.
Police spokesman Sven Mueller said one of the two dead men had fired the shots, adding that nobody else appeared to have been hurt in the incident.
