Here's one way I've cleaned my cheap or average area carpets, even if they're a bit large.
I take them to the car was and hang them on the clips. Start with wetting them down, then squeeze natural, unsented soap on them. Working from the top down just start spraying them, over and over to get the soap out.
If you have a railing take them home and throw them over the railing, use clamps whatever. It will take a long, depending how hot it is there, to dry but it's worth it in the long run. Do it on a fence with a high powered hose. Hot water is best though. and just rotate the carpet/rug. Turn the carpet from underside and topside. The rug must be fully dry.

Do not use all those scented cleaning products.
