Lavrov, Shaaban discuss latest developments in Syria

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed on Thursday with Presidential Political and Media Advisor Buthaina Shaaban the latest developments in Syria and the efforts exerted to contribute to the political process in a way that guarantees Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

A statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Lavrov briefed Shaaban on the outcomes of the 4th summit of Presidents of Astana guarantor countries, Russia, Iran and Turkey which was convened in Sochi on February 14th.

Army expands operations against terrorists in Idleb, destroys their positions in Hama

ANA reporter said that army units destroyed a number of terrorists’ dens in the towns and villages of Kafr Nubbul, Hass, Basqala, Hish, Baboulin, Ma’asaran and Khan al-Soboul.

In Hama, SANA reporter said army units confronted this afternoon infiltration attempts by terrorist groups from the direction of Wadi al-Dawrat towards military points in the surrounding of al-Masasina village in the northern countryside of the province.

In Hama northern countryside, SANA reporter said that army units destroyed positions of “al-Ezza Battalions” terrorists on the outskirts of the towns of Hasraya, al-Arbain, al-Latamina and Kafr Zita in Hama northern countryside.

The reporter added that the army units conducted intensive operations against the terrorists’ positions in al-Madiq Castle, Jisr Beit al-Ras and al-Hweiz village, killing and injuring many of them.

Militants Shell Strategic Town In Northern Aleppo Triggering Fierce Response From Syrian Army

For the first time in more than five months, radical militants launched heavy improvised rocket-assisted munitions (IRAMs) at the government-held town of al-Zahar in the northern Aleppo countryside on February 21.

“The terrorist attack caused material damage … However, no civilians were injured,” the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reporter in Aleppo said.

The attack triggered a fierce response from the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), which shelled militant positions in the towns of Kafr Nabl, Hass, Basqala, Hish, Babuline, Maasaran and Khan al-Sabil in the southern Idlib countryside.

Over the last few days, militants stepped up their attacks on civilian areas in the government-held parts of Aleppo and Hama. In response, the army began to shell militants’ positions in northern Lattakia, northern Hama, southern Idlib and western Aleppo.

Large Explosion Rocks Afrin Following Military Parade Of Turkish-Backed Militants

A booby-trapped car exploded near the Deir Rasm hospital in the center of the Turkish-occupied city of Afrin on February 21, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR). More than eight people were reportedly injured in the explosion.

“Some of the injured civilians, including children, are in a critical condition,” the monitoring group’s report reads.

Army, National Defense Forces Finish Their Combing Operation In Central Syria

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and the National Defense Forces (NDF) finished their combing operation in the central region of Syria on February 21, according to the NDF’s media center.

The operation, which began earlier this month, covered the safe areas between the deserts of Homs, Damascus, Deir Ezzor, Raqqa and even a strip of the border with Iraq. In the course of the operation, the SAA killed several ISIS members and seized loads of weapons and military equipment, which had been left behind by the terrorist group.

The combing operation was aimed at preventing the remaining ISIS fighters in central Syria from launching new attacks on residential areas in the northern al-Suwayda countryside and the eastern oms countryside.

Despite the success of the operation, the terrorist group is still controlling more than 4,000km2 between Homs and Damascus, according to a recent report by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR). Observers believe that hundreds of highly-experienced, well-armed terrorists are currently hiding there.

IRS Analyst Charged With Leaking Michael Cohen’s Financial Records

An analyst with the Internal Revenue Service was charged Thursday with leaking the financial records of former Trump attorney Michael Cohen.

An affidavit submitted in the case reveals that John C. Fry, the analyst, placed several phone calls to attorney Michael Avenatti before and after he accessed Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) that had been filed by Cohen’s banks with the Treasury Department.

Avenatti, an attorney for Stormy Daniels, had posted a dossier of Cohen’s financial reports on May 8, 2018. The records showed that Cohen received payments from several companies, including Novartis and AT&T, as well as a company associated with Viktor Vekselberg, a Russian oligarch.

The documents released by Avenatti also contained financial records of a different Michael Cohen.

According to an FBI agent’s affidavit, Fry first accessed the IRS’s database of SARs on May 4, 2018 and downloaded five documents related to Cohen. “Immediately” after downloading the reports, Fry called a phone number associated with Avenatti, the agent said.

Minutes after that phone call ended, Fry conducted several more searches of Cohen’s records.

Avenatti denied doing anything wrong by having contact with Fry.

“That is absurd and ridiculous. I did nothing wrong just like reporters do nothing wrong when they receive and report information,” he told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

The affidavit, signed by Special Agent Linda Cielsak, also detailed contacts between Fry and New Yorker reporter Ronan Farrow, who wrote an article on May 16, 2018 about Cohen’s financial records. Farrow quoted Fry anonymously, and asserted that the IRS agent leaked the Cohen records out of concern that they had been improperly removed from the IRS’s databases as part of what he believed to be a cover-up.

It was later reported that Cohen’s records had been removed from the general database because they were part of ongoing investigations, not because of a cover-up.

Cohen was sentenced to 36 months in prison on Dec. 12 on charges related to tax evasion, bank fraud and making illegal campaign contributions. He pleaded guilty to paying Stormy Daniels $130,000 to keep her quiet regarding an alleged affair with Donald Trump.

The legal battle between Cohen, Trump and Daniels pitted Cohen and Avenatti against each other in the press.

McConnell Fast-Tracks Vote On Ocasio-Cortez's "Green New Deal"

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell could toss a major stinkbomb into the 2020 Democratic Primary as soon as next week.

According to the Hill, the Republican leader is planning to call a vote on the "Green New Deal" resolution championed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Ed Markey.

Though no Republicans have expressed support for the deal, McConnell's wants to fast-track a vote on the resolution as a ploy to divide Democrats between supporters and opponents and force 2020 primary contenders to go on the record either supporting or opposing the non-binding resolution. So far, most of the contenders have spoken favorably of the deal, including Kamala Harris, Kirsten Gillibrand, Cory Booker and Elizabeth Warren, while others, including Amy Klobuchar, have been somewhat more tentative.
