I live in SF Bay Area. Don't even mention what you believe in a coffee shop. You will death glares or worse. Mostly crazy about climate change.
The tourist parts are usually okay. Just don't leave anything that looks valuable in your car. And prepare your kids to see people with odd sexual tastes.
Those don't happen in tourist places. The biggest danger, as far as I am concerned, is getting hit by some sort of vehicle. Pedestrian safety crisis in California. Even the sidewalk is full of electric vehicles. Many will not stop for people in a crosswalk. You cannot trust the walk don't walk signs.
