The gulf issue is way more complicated…BP "accidentally" drilled into the mantel of the earth in their first hole gone wrong (prior to leak 'seal" debacle). When they discovered what they'd done they backed out of the hole and tried to seal it with heavy water/mud.

That did not end well. Correlate between "accidental' mantel drilling with hole that cannot be sealed with area of hot spot also NM fault.

The oil leak was bad enough, drilling into the mantel=even worse.

I don't know…but when I saw the information about the first hole, I knew it was far more dangerous than the second hole which had a "leaky seal" which made me wonder if the leaky seal was more to create oily environment which would make investigating the first hole less likely. For all I know the attempt to seal the first hole was fake, the drilling into the mantle was purposeful and they may or may not have deposited something down there that….well…
