I've been worried about the grid for… forever. Those in the know claim that the entire grid could be hardened for just a few billion $$$ but nothing has been done. A long-term blackout would be catastrophic but what worries me the most is what happens to the nuclear power plants when they have run out of diesel fuel to run the generators needed to keep cooling water circulating.
Maybe I'm stupid but why does ANY power plant which is generating electricity need to rely on diesel generator backup? Can't they just use some of the juice that they're generating to power all of their own electrical needs?
