Air trafic controller Anon's thoughts (Not working at Houston Approach today but worked Center sector that hands off to approach via that fix.

Saw the radar replay but no voice. Seems normal until it enters approach airspace. Slowed to 230 kts normally but then makes a right and then left turn then augers in. Saw no reason for either turn.

Best guess at this point (very prelim) is 2 possibilities…

  1. Most likely cargo shift. Might explain the turns and certainly explains nose down impact as witnesses say. They also say engines were screaming but that's always suspect.

  1. Something took out an engine on the side the aircraft was turning making it tough to regain control. Low and slow, in a turn, lose the inside engine and sometimes the crew loses the aircraft. Saw that happen a few years ago in Colorado going into Aspen.

My guess is cargo shift.

Might be possible, but that would be similar to the LionAir crash issue. That would be a complex investigation, so if they're lead to that, it's going to take a while to get an idea what happened. Usually these things work out to be the most obvious cause - unless it was fuckery involved.
