JPMorgan absolved by U.S. judge in former top broker's suicide

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A federal judge in Manhattan on Tuesday dismissed a wrongful death lawsuit against JPMorgan Chase & Co by the estate of a former top broker, who it said committed suicide after being forced into retirement.

U.S. District Judge John Keenan said it was not reasonably foreseeable that JPMorgan’s treatment of Michael Lorig would cause him to take his life at age 66 on Jan. 22, 2017, after years of what the estate called depression and mental illness.

POTUS, sir, this is ATROCIOUS!

Parents say 'sextortion' by inmates drove Army veteran to suicide

The parents of a U.S. Army veteran who took his life last year blame his suicide on inmates in South Carolina who they say carried out a "sextortion" plot.

Kathy Bowling and Kevin Johns believe that scammers from Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, S.C. contacted Jared Johns and pretended to be the parents of a 17-year-old girl who had sent him illicit photographs, and demanded $1,189 to cover costs of disconnecting the phone and buying a new one.

According to transcripts of text message conversations, which the parents shared with Greenville News, the 24-year-old Johns had a conversation with a person claiming to be “James Harris,” and his wife “Mrs Harris.” In a series of back-and-forth messages, which appeared to have taken place after a phone call that got disconnected, Johns writes that he understands why the couple would be so upset.

“I have two kids of my own a 2 year old and 1 year old,” he wrote, adding he has no recollection of the incident. He pleads for clarification, to no avail.

"She is going to the police and you are going to jail,” Mrs Harris replied.

Shortly after that last exchange – and on the 17th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, the event that made him want to join the military — Johns died from a self-inflicted gunshot, according to Greenville County Senior Deputy Coroner Kent Dill.

“I think the PTSD just took over,” his mother told The Greenville News, referring to a diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder that Johns received after returning from service in Afghanistan.

Youtube ignored repeated reports about explicit suicide instructions spliced into cartoons on Youtube Kids

A griefer has been reportedly splicing video of himself giving explicit instructions for committing suicide into animated videos on Youtube Kids; he lets the video run for several minutes before breaking in to say "Kids, remember, cut this way for attention, and this way for results"; despite "hundreds of reports" of this in the comments for the videos, they stayed online for several months until members of the Pedimom community (run by pediatrician/mother Free N Hess) made a concerted effort to report the videos.

The Pedimom community has surfaced two videos with the suicide instructions spliced into them. They hypothesize that the griefer allows for a lengthy preroll of normal cartoons so that parents are lulled into a sense of security and walk away from their kids, never hearing the offensive material.

Chris Cornell's doctor denies any wrongdoing in singer's suicide death, wants malpractice lawsuit dismissed

Chris Cornell’s doctor claims he did nothing wrong when he prescribed Ativan to the singer without an exam or any discussion of the drug’s tendency to cause suicidal ideation.

Cornell, the former lead singer of Soundgarden, died of suicide in May 2017.

In a new court filing, lawyers for Dr. Robert Koblin say a negligence lawsuit filed by Cornell’s widow and children in November should be dismissed.

The lawsuit accused Koblin and his staff of prescribing 940 doses of Lorazepam (brand name Ativan) to Cornell starting in September 2015 without a single in-person medical exam during the 20-month period leading up to his death.

“(Dr. Koblin) did not even see or speak to Mr. Cornell during this period,” the lawsuit stated.

In his new paperwork filed Friday in Los Angeles, the doctor claims he acted in “good faith” when he first prescribed to Cornell “upon the request of another physician under conditions arising from the prior care” of the unidentified doctor.

“Any damage or injury suffered by the plaintiff was caused by risks of which plaintiff was well aware or reasonably should have been aware, and which plaintiff voluntarily assumed,” the filing from Dr. Koblin’s legal team reads.

The paperwork further argues that Cornell “asked not to be informed” of the risks of his “simple” treatment.
