Landis' uncle said he was flying with his brother Patrick on a solemn flight to spread their father's ashes.

Witnesses at the scene reported the plane was sputtering before it crashed just beyond the runway.

Sky 5 showed the plane about 50 feet to the side the runway at the edge of Chandler Millpond.

Crews hoisted the plane from the muddy edge of the pond Friday night and towed it to a hangar as they search for evidence of trouble.

Rescuers said they had carried the brothers out of the plane wreckage in about 15 minutes, transporting them by medical helicopter to Boston area hospitals.

Scott Landis was flown to Massachusetts General Hospital where he died as a result of his injuries. Patrick Landis was taken to Tufts Medical Center where is being treated.

The crash was a heartbreaking turn for a family already grieving.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are both investigating the crash.
