A marine Osprey sounds somewhat like a gigantic helicopter only much, much louder. It has two tilt rotors so when it is in forward flight, the rotors are turned perpendicular to the ground like gigantic propellors. Very loud. Maybe check out Osprey video on youtube and see if the sound matches what you heard? It's a unique and distinctive sound.
