Pakistan To Release Captured Indian Pilot As "Goodwill Gesture"

 

Before international intermediaries even had a chance to step in to try to quell the escalating conflict, the Indian military started digging bunkers and deploying tanks along the border with Pakistan as the Hindu nationalist government of Narendra Modi - who is struggling to revive sagging poll numbers in the final weeks before a crucial election - told Islamabad that it would not negotiate for the release of captured pilot Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who was taken into custody by Pakistani jawans after his plane was shot down Wednesday following an aerial skirmish that led to downed planes on both sides.

 

Fearing not only a military escalation, but also the pressing financial economic concerns as his country seeks another bailout from the IMF, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan said during a joint session of Parliament on Thursday that the captured pilot would be released as a "gesture of goodwill" on Friday.

Bush at the beginning of this century. Again and again on my radio talk show and in this column, I tried to warn Christians about the way the Bush presidency was distorting Christ’s teaching and how millions of our countrymen were being turned off to Christianity as a result. Former Trump White House aide Cliff Sims has told the Christian Post that he fears Trump-loving evangelical leaders are turning an entire generation away from Christianity thanks to their embrace of an amoral president.

 

Sims, who wrote a scathing insider’s account of life in President Donald Trump’s White House called “Team of Vipers,” explains in an interview with the Christian publication that many people on Trump’s faith advisory board are vicious social climbers who will happily knife one another to maintain their access to the president.

 

“I found some of the board to be mainly interested in maintaining their proximity to power, even to the point of trashing ‘rival’ faith leaders to keep them from threatening their own position close to the President,” he says.

 

Sims also reveals that he’s worried about how the president’s top evangelical advisers are affecting Americans’ views of Christianity.

 

“I’m haunted by the late author Brennan Man­ning’s quote, ‘The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Chris­tians who acknowledge Jesus with their lips and walk out the door and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable,'” he says.

Putin and Modi hold phone conference on situation between India and Pakistan

UN Security Council votes to reject Russian, US resolutions on Venezuela

 

UN, February 28. /TASS/. The UN Security Council on Thursday voted to reject two rival resolutions on Venezuela, put forward by Russia and the United States.

Russian resolution

 

The Russian resolution was supported by four countries (Russia, China, Equatorial Guinea and South Africa), Seven nations, such as the United States and several European nations, voted against. Four UN Security Council members, including Indonesia and Kuwait, abstained.

 

The resolution, authored by Moscow, contains a call to peaceful settlement of the crisis on the basis of dialogue, including the mechanism created by a group of nations in Montevideo. A provision about humanitarian assistance to Venezuela was added to the latest version of the document. According to it, the Security Council acknowledges the Venezuelan government’s leading role in initiating, organizing, coordinating and putting into practice measures of international humanitarian assistance on its territory. It also says that such initiatives can be carried out only with the consent and upon the request of the Venezuelan government.

Earlier in the day, Russia and China used their veto on Thursday to block the resolution on Venezulea, which has been put forward by the United States and makes a call to hold elections in the country.
