Surrounding communities have become ghettoized as result

Am somewhat local – my guess is this a domestic situation - all the more dangerous for the people involved and for law enforcement.

COBB COUNTY, Ga. - Channel 2 Action News has learned Smyrna police are at the scene of a hostage situation involving children.

Channel 2’s Chris Jose says the situation is unfolding at a large apartment complex on Huntington Trace Drive.

Police told Jose there are two children younger than 5 being held hostage inside an apartment by two men.

Investigators said a woman was able to escape the hostage takers. Police say that woman is the estranged wife of one of the men inside the apartment. The two children belong to the man and woman.

Police have not said what the relationship is with the other man involved. Negotiators have spent the last few hours speaking with the men holed up inside the apartment.

Jose said no one is being let into or out of the apartment complex as a large police presence has the area locked down.

Schools are holding children who live in the area at school until the situation ends.
