Russia is weaker than they show. They have to leverage their nukes and their natural gas to stay relevant push for recognition of their territorial claims in Crimea.

Russia has long held influence over iran and used them as a proxy state to influence the Middle East. Syria/assad is a much weaker proxy. Obama sent Iran 1.7 Billion, probably undermining russia's influence.(If that money actually got there).
