Trump: Congress should demand copy of Michael Cohen 'love letter to Trump' that contradicts his testimony
President Trump said Congress should demand to see the draft of a book proposal from Michael Cohen that reportedly praises Trump, to discredit Cohen, who slammed Trump as a liar in testimony this week.
“Congress must demand the transcript of Michael Cohen’s new book, given to publishers a short time ago. Your heads will spin when you see the lies, misrepresentations and contradictions against his Thursday testimony. Like a different person! He is totally discredited!” Trump tweeted Friday morning. “Wow, just revealed that Michael Cohen wrote a 'love letter to Trump' manuscript for a new book that he was pushing. Written and submitted long after Charlottesville and Helsinki, his phony reasons for going rogue. Book is exact opposite of his fake testimony, which now is a lie!” Trump added in a second tweet.
Trump appeared to be referring to a report from the Daily Mail, which wrote Thursday that Cohen had proposed a book about Trump just weeks before the FBI raided his residence and office. The paper claimed to get a copy of the proposal Cohen was considering, which would have netted him $750,000. The Daily Mail said Cohen only had good things to say about Trump in his proposal, contrary to his Wednesday testimony where he said the president is a “racist,” “con man,” and “cheat.”
Cohen is facing three years in prison for lying to Congress and violating campaign finance laws in carrying out two hush-money payments during the 2016 campaign to women that alleged they engaged in extramarital affairs with Trump. Trump said that the book proposal shows that Cohen committed another instance of perjury.
“Michael Cohen’s book manuscript shows that he committed perjury on a scale not seen before,” Trump tweeted. “He must have forgotten about his book when he testified. What does Hillary Clinton’s lawyer, Lanny Davis, say about this one. Is he being paid by Crooked Hillary. Using her lawyer?” During his public testimony before the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday, Cohen said he was not ruling out the possibility of a book, TV, or movie deal on his time working for Trump and the fall out from the good graces of the president.
