Coffee houses were banned in England by King Charles II in the mid 17th century. People had started to drink coffee instead of alcohol so they were sobering up. Shockingly, the Age of Enlightenment followed. Dovetails nicely into the Englands involvement during the opium wars and todays pharmaceuticals. Historically, the crown loves their subjects doped up.
