Japan also may open talks about Okinawa base move. It will be interesting to see POTUS reaction.

Tamaki wants U.S., Japan, Okinawa talks on U.S. base move

The governor of Okinawa pushed for three-way talks Friday involving his group of islands, Japan's central government and the U.S. on how to move forward following a referendum that rejected a relocation plan for an American military base.

The referendum is not legally binding but Gov Danny Tamaki stressed that it holds significance and must be respected as showing a clear will of the people of Okinawa on a single issue. He said that dialogue was key to work toward a solution.

"The democracy of the Japanese government is now being tested," Tamaki told reporters after meeting Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission Joseph Young in Tokyo.

Tamaki said he delivered a letter for President Donald Trump about the referendum. He did not elaborate on what scenarios might be discussed at the three-way talks, but stressed the results of the referendum "speak for everything."

Sunday's vote showed 72 percent of Okinawans oppose the plan for the Marine air base being built on a landfill in coastal Henoko.

There was something really strange about that. Watching Korean TV feed, the talking heads were describing what they called scrambling security as Un left. It might have been because of the changed schedule but it seemed odd.
