The thing with art (and other fields, like comedy) is that it's all about pushing the envelope. You can't do what's been done before, because then it's copying, not showing originality, not interesting. You get the most interest (or most laffs) by being audacious, unexpected, pushing the envelope.

That also gives them a potential "out" for "artistic license" or satire.

"Oh I didn't literally mean I wanted to go out and eat a baby, I was making a statement about the condition of the world today" or something.
