The District’s rapidly rising homicide rate has claimed the life of a beloved Pakistani philosopher — gunned down Friday near his Southeast D.C. home.

Mr Bhutto was the head of the philosophy department at Sindh University before he moved to the US. His wife, Nafisa Hoodbhoy, is a former Dawn staffer who now works for the Voice of America broadcasting service. Eminent Pakistani physicist Pervez Hoodbhoy is Mr Bhutto’s brother-in-law.
