In spades, if you start with hearts, diamonds, clubs and have none to play, you would play your lowest spade to trump the trick and take it all. If you do not want that trick you throw "off suit" for example if hearts was lead, you have no hearts, but your partner has the ace, you throw diamonds or clubs so they can take the trick- unless you have only spades… and must step on your partner- then you still throw the smallest spade
There are many, depending on what the others have played. Highest is High Joker, Low Joker, Ace of Spades, King, queen, etc… but even a low spade can trump an ace of any other suit.
