Meghan McCain slams 'ghoulish' CPAC reference to her father's 'ghost'

Meghan McCain on Sunday slammed what she described as a "ghoulish" reference to her father, the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), made by a commentator at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).

"I care that 'the ghost' of my beloved father was used as ghoulish and deeply disturbed political propaganda on CPAC’s stage, but hey maybe that’s just me," McCain wrote in a tweet.

McCain was referencing a remark made by conservative commentator Michelle Malkin, who mentioned John McCain while blaming Republicans in Congress for not taking action on immigration.

“Sanctuary cities have metastasized and both parties are to blame,” Malkin said. “And yes, I’m looking at you, retired [Speaker] Paul Ryan; and yes, I’m looking at you, [Senate Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell; and yes, I’m looking at you, Bush family; and yes, I’m looking at you, the ghost of John McCain.”

McCain's tweet Sunday was in response to conservative commentator Allie Beth Stuckey writing on Twitter that she was "proud of the conversations" she had at CPAC and didn't "care what anyone says."

"Lots of complaints from left & right about what CPAC was or wasn’t this year. I don’t care what anyone says—I’m proud of the conversations I was a part of about religious liberty and the future of the American family," she tweeted.

Stuckey responded to McCain, saying she was not "rebuffing all criticism of CPAC" and that she is a "a Meghan McCain fan."

McCain said later on Twitter that she "misunderstood" Stuckey's original tweet, and Stuckey subsequently said the two had spoken and that "everything's all good."
