Helicopter Crash in Kenya Kills 4 Americans, Kenyan Pilot

Four Americans and a Kenyan pilot have died in a helicopter crash in northwestern Kenya.

The aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff Sunday.

The incident happened on the remote Central Island National Park on Lake Turkana.

Gilbert Kibe, director general of the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, said in a statement that two helicopters had taken off from the island Sunday, but "unfortunately one of the helicopters … lost contact and crashed on the island."

The identities of the passengers and the pilot have not been released, pending notification of their families.

US attempts to topple Venezuelan govt by shifting control of Citgo to opposition have so far failed

Venezuela is scrambling to find buyers for its oil, hoping to keep revenue streams alive even as President Nicolas Maduro loses control of Citgo.

The US-based subsidiary of PDVSA officially severed ties with its parent company in order to comply with US sanctions, according to Reuters. The American government is trying to shift control of Citgo into the hands of Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó. Citgo has stopped sending payments to PDVSA, and Gauidó has appointed a new board to the company. Some Venezuelan employees working at Citgo in the US returned back to Caracas.

Citgo is one of the major prizes that the US has tried to wrestle away from Maduro as part of the American regime change campaign in Venezuela. Citgo is the eight largest refiner in the US at 750,000 bpd, and it owns pipelines and retail gasoline stations. The company is a key source of revenue for the Venezuelan government.

In a statement to INSIDER, the US Embassy in Nairobi confirmed the death of the four Americans, and named three of them as Anders Asher Jesiah Burke, Brandon Howe Stapper, and Kyle John Forti.

The pilot, Mario Magonga, previously served in Kenya's Defence Forces, the country's Daily Nation newspaper reported. His cousin reportedly told the NTV news channel that Magonga had been cleared to fly people requiring high security in the past, including former president Barack Obama.

It's not clear whether Magonga actually flew Obama, or merely had clearance to.

A fire chief and firefighter from a local volunteer department found Leia and Caroline Carrico in a wooded area about 1½ miles (2.3 kilometers) from their home in the small community of Benbow, where they had last been seen Friday afternoon, Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal said.

Benbow is about 200 miles (320 kilometers) northwest of Sacramento.

The girls were “safe and sound” and uninjured, thanks in part to survival training they got with their local 4-H club, Honsal said.

2020: Eric Holder Announces He Won’t Run for President

Former Attorney General Eric Holder announced in a Washington Post opinion-editorial Monday that he will not run for president in 2020.

“Though I will not run for president in 2020, I will continue to fight for the future of our country through the National Democratic Redistricting Committee and its affiliates,” Holder wrote. Holder did not say which of the Democrat presidential candidates he might endorse but said there are many “good options.” He said candidates must focus on addressing climate change, immigration and ensuring that a Democrat is elected president in 2020. Holder had met with former President Barack Obama, in whose administration he served from 2009 to 2015, to discuss a presidential candidacy.

The announcement comes after the Obama-era official told reporters earlier February that he would soon make a decision on a White House bid.
